The Wild Shayne Fan Theory That May Explain His Bizarre Behavior

When a reality TV show offers up a villainous character, viewers rarely question their actions or motives. Instead, they simply choose to dislike them. Rarely, viewers might become so floored by a villain's actions that they desperately seek explanations and try to uncover the root of their behavior. Netflix's hit reality show "Love is Blind" presented fans with plenty of villains to actively hate. Season 2 garnered even more attention than its predecessor, partly because of how many villains emerged this time around.

Naturally, one name stands out among the other problematic cast members: Shake Chatterjee. The show's self-proclaimed villain wasted no time in making bold, offensive statements. Per TODAY, he also managed to rile up the show's hosts Vanessa and Nick Lachey at the "Love is Blind" reunion. But apart from Shake, there was another messy, walking red flag who was working overtime. From his constant gaslighting to the fact he created a messy love triangle between himself, Natalie Lee and Shaina Hurley, Shayne Jansen was nothing if not polarizing. But unlike Shake, viewers found Shayne's antics to be concerning, instead of aggravating.

Viewers wondered whether Shayne Jansen was on drugs

Throughout Season 2 of "Love is Blind," Shayne Jansen's actions were undeniably bizarre — and viewers noticed his odd moments from the early days in the 'pods.' There, Shayne appeared to be incapable of sitting still as he twitched around the room. In particular, his twitching hit an all-time high while he waited for Natalie Lee at the altar. And while Shayne drew flack for gas-lighting his now ex-fiancée, it was his ticks that stood out the most. Some fans turned him into a meme to poke fun at the matter, but others were concerned that Shayne was exhibiting signs of ADHD, per ScreenRant. "I think Shayne needs to see a doctor. I'm not being facetious or condescending," one concerned user wrote on Twitter.

While one camp of fans felt his erratic behavior was the result of ADHD, an entirely different sect of viewers wondered whether Shayne was on drugs. Social media exploded as fans weighed in on the drugs versus medical condition debate, per Meaww. When asked whether he believed Shayne to be on drugs, Shake Chatterjee threw fuel on the fuel by cryptically proclaiming, "Everything you're thinking is probably right."

Shayne Jansen responded to the drug allegations

For a time, Shayne Jansen did nothing to address the rumors that he was on drugs — but his ex-fiancée Natalie Lee did attempt to defend him. "I just feel really bad. I feel like people need to remember that we are human beings. We have feelings. Those things are hurtful. I certainly don't appreciate seeing it, and I'm sure he doesn't either," Natalie revealed on Alyssa Amoroso's podcast, "Tea with Publyssity."

Shayne didn't stay quiet for long, though. The reality star finally responded to the allegations during an episode of Nick Viall's "The Viall Files" podcast, in which he denied ever having been on drugs while filming "Love is Blind." "Have I [done them]? Yes. On the show I did not." Shayne said. "I have experience with a few [drugs]. Nothing that's been injected into my body, but I think we've all had our times in our lives where we've done certain things." Shayne also addressed the logistical impossibility of doing drugs during the filming process. "I'm mic'd up the whole time. Everyone would have heard me do it. It's wild to think that I was carrying cocaine on me, and I was snorting lines and doing all this kind of stuff in the bathroom when I'm mic'd up. They can literally hear you whispering. ...How could they not hear me do it?" he added.

How did Shayne Jansen explain his behavior?

After Shayne Jansen came clean (literally), the public was possibly left with even more questions. If not drugs, then how else to explain Shayne's inability to sit still, or his wide-eyed glares? As it turns out, fan's theories about the reality star's ADHD were correct. Speaking with host Nick Viall on "The Viall Files," Shayne explained that his mental health, coupled with his "horrible anxious energy" led to his unusual behavior on the show. He further added that he had consumed copious amounts of caffeine — think up to 5 espresso shots a day — which didn't help his erratic movements.

As for his infamous altar scene, Shayne had an explanation for that too. "My wedding day where I looked like I was coked out of my mind, I didn't sleep for two days straight because I had no idea what she was going to say at the altar, no idea," the real estate broker said, per "The Viall Files." "My mom was in town, my whole family was in town. I was so embarrassed, my anxiety was going crazy."
