The Days Of Our Lives Time Jump Explained

"Days of Our Lives" has become known for its shocking plot twists and pushing the envelope when it comes to its storylines (via Soap Hub). The NBC soap opera has prevailed for more than five decades and continues to draw in viewers with epic love stories such as Ben Weston and Ciara Brady, as well as wild plots like Marlena Evans being possessed by the devil.

Over the years, the show has captivated fans with plots such as beloved characters being killed by The Salem Stalker and sent to Melaswen Island, Vivian Alamain burying Carly Manning Alive, and Will Horton coming out, as well as the sad deaths of "Days of Our Lives" characters such as Stefano DiMera, Bo Brady, Lexie Carver, and Zack Brady, per Fame 10.

Of course, one of the most memorable storylines on "Days of Our Lives" came when the soap opted to do something that no other daytime series had done before, per TV Insider. The show created a time jump that skipped over an entire year's worth of time.

What led to the Days of Our Lives time jump?

"Days of Our Lives" fans were thrilled when Jack Deveraux (Matthew Ashford) and Jennifer Horton (Melissa Reeves) reconciled and planned a wedding in 2019. The couple held a double wedding ceremony with their friends, another newly-reconnected couple Justin Kiriakis (Wally Kurth) and Adrienne Kiriakis (Judi Evans). However, the wedding turned tragic after Jennifer was severely injured, per Daily Soap Dish.

It all started with Stefano DiMera's right-hand man, Dr. Rolf. The scientist implanted a chip into Hope Brady's brain to make her believe that she was Princess Gina yet again. He also implanted a chip into the brain of Steve Johnson to make him believe that he was Stefano himself (via News 24). Gina and Stefano plotted to break up John Black and Marlena Evans, but things went wrong when Gina was discovered by Jennifer.

The discovery lead to Gina pushing Jennifer from a balcony and sending her into a coma that lasted for an entire year, per Soaps. During this time, "DOOL" skipped Jennifer's coma, and fans found out what transpired throughout the year as Jennifer did.

DOOL skipped over Jennifer's entire coma

"Days of Our Lives" skipped Jennifer's entire year-long coma with an epic time jump. When Jennifer woke up it had been only a matter of a couple of episodes for viewers. However, an entire year had passed, and Jack was there sitting vigil at her bedside the entire time. Jennifer came out of her coma only to find that Salem was not the way she left it. She had no memory of what happened to her and was shocked to learn that she'd been unconscious for so long, per Distractify.

Jennifer was told that her daughter Abigail and son-in-law Chad had moved back to Salem amid her medical crisis. She was also told that there had been some heartbreaking deaths in Salem. Brady Black and Kristen DiMera were told that their daughter had passed away (via Soaps). In addition, Haley Chen, the girlfriend of Jennifer's son, JJ Deveraux, had also passed away after falling down a set of stairs, per Soap Dirt. Perhaps the most shocking death was that of Adrienne Kiriakis, who was killed in a tragic car accident while Jennifer was in a coma. It was thought that Adrienne's own son-in-law, Will Horton (Chandler Massey) was behind the car crash and he found himself behind bars with none other than Ben Weston (Robert Scott Wilson), who had been convicted of murdering his sister, Jordan Ridgeway.

A lot changed during the one year time jump

In addition to the shocking deaths that occurred during the "Days of Our Lives" time jump, there were plenty of other big changes. Kristen left town after her baby's death, and Lani Price (Sal Stowers) also left Salem following a heartbreaking split with Eli Grant (Lamon Archey). They met up overseas and joined a convent while preparing to become nuns (via Soap Hub). Meanwhile, Eric Brady (Greg Vaughan) and Nicole Walker (Arianne Zucker) were planning a wedding, and Xander Kiriakis (Paul Telfer) had become CEO of Titan Industries, where Ciara Brady (Victoria Konefal) was also working at her grandfather Victor's company, per Soaps.

In addition, Justin Kiraikis and Kayla Brady began a romance in the wake of Adrienne's death. The couple fell hard for each other and even moved in together shortly after Adrienne's passing (via Soaps in Depth). All the while, Kate Roberts (Lauren Koslow) opted to leave her corporate lifestyle and was hired as a waitress at the Brady Pub by Roman Brady (Josh Taylor), per Daily Soap Dish.

It was a bold move by the soap opera to skip an entire year in time. However, with flashbacks and present-day scenes, fans were quickly clued into everything that was happening and had fun finding out new info day after day.
