Patrick & Brittany Mahomes' Relationship Was Very One-Sided When It Began
Patrick and Brittany Mahomes are basically NFL royalty thanks to Patrick's position on the Kansas City Chiefs, which makes him an eye watering amount of money (though with Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce engaged to superstar Taylor Swift, they may have been dethroned as NFL's most well known couple). Long before they became household names to NFL fans, Patrick and Brittany were high school sweethearts. However, it turns out that Brittany hadn't really thought about a relationship with Patrick when she first met him.
Brittany and Patrick did a couples quiz for GQ Sports, and one of the questions was "who was interested in who first," and Brittany said that Patrick was into her first though he jokingly disagreed. "Maybe he was in the friend zone for a very long time," Brittany said. It can be tricky to know if you should leave the friend zone and date, but it clearly worked out for Brittany.
Brittany talked about when her feelings for him went from friends to more than that in an interview with Vitality. It was during her junior year and his sophomore year in high school, and he gave her a Valentine's Day card in what she said was more of a joke. But it apparently got her thinking of him in a different way, and now they're married with three kids together.
Brittany and Patrick Mahomes are both competitive, which has helped their relationship
As for why Brittany and Patrick Mahomes got together and have stayed together, their competitive natures played a big role. In an interview with People in 2025, Patrick explained, "there's no better feeling than having someone by your side who is just as competitive as you and supports you in everything you do." Brittany played soccer in high school while Patrick played football and basketball. They both played sports after high school while navigating a long distance relationship through their college years.
And Patrick isn't the only pro athlete in the family. Brittany competed for a year as a professional soccer player in Iceland. While Brittany might not still be a pro the way her husband is, she clearly understands the pressures. And along with building a family together, they work together as well; the couple are also co-founders and co-owners of the Kansas City Current, a professional women's soccer team. So the two started as friends and helped each other build a beautiful family and impressive careers; we love to see it.
