The Tragedy Of Jason Momoa's Life Is So Sad

Over the last two decades, Jason Momoa has undergone a stunning transformation from being a series regular in franchises like "Baywatch" to a bona fide film star in spectacles such as "Dune." Whether he's portraying a 6-foot-4, savage-like monarch in "Game of Thrones" or a water-dwelling superhero in "Aquaman," his on–screen charisma heavily reflects in his day-to-day life, as Momoa is just as colorful as his fictional counterparts. Through this, we've seen a fair share of positivity from the actor, who appears much softer and sweeter than his intimidating exterior.

His journey to success is a tale of luck and hard work, but it is also one where tragedy played a significant role. Though he hides this well every now and again, Momoa has had his fair share of issues that would surprise most people. This likely turned him into the lively person he became, but these tragedies aren't any less tear-jerking to hear about or bear witness to. From being a victim of violent assaults and publicly navigating a divorce to inconsistent acting stints and coping with loss on numerous occasions, Momoa has led a fruitful yet tragic life. To learn more about the extent to which he faced some of these personal challenges, here are the tragic details Momoa has shared about his life.

Jason Momoa was bullied as a child for his racial background

Born on August 1, 1979, in Honolulu, Hawaii, Jason Momoa is of mixed ethnicity, maintaining strong ties to Native Hawaiian, German, Irish, and Native American ancestry throughout his life. Amidst his parents' split, Momoa relocated to Iowa, where he was raised by his mother, Coni Momoa, for most of his childhood. This wasn't easy for him, for the same reasons parental splits are challenging for children. However, he'd maintain a close relationship with his father, Joseph Momoa, spending summer vacations with him in Hawaii. Unfortunately, his life in Iowa seemingly suffered in the long run.

Given his racial background, Momoa told InStyle in 2020 that this made him a target for numerous bullies. As a kid who was "a product of two very opposite worlds," Momoa struggled with coming to terms with his identity early on. That, alongside his varied interests in art and skateboarding, he had a tough time finding common ground with his classmates. "I got beat up a lot. Just for being slightly different—it was gnarly," the actor explained. "I mean, I wore Birkenstocks in middle school, and it was like, 'You are a freak!'" Though it's hard to believe that someone like Momoa could've gotten bullied, it certainly speaks to his later commitment to being himself, despite how the public may perceive him.

He almost drowned while surfing in 2007

If it weren't for his background in surfing, Jason Momoa probably wouldn't have gotten the opportunity to star in "Baywatch." Surfing, however, was also an interest that nearly killed him in 2007. On the "Smartless" podcast in 2025, Momoa spoke about a near-fatal incident while surfing during a windy day in Maui (via Huffington Post). According to the "Baywatch" actor, he was caught in a 10-foot wave, which pulled him miles away from his friends. Despite his attempt to signal for help, he was caught on an outer reef. When he freed himself, another incoming wave hit him. "I dig my feet into the coral, and I'm literally in the middle of the ocean, and I'm just, I could barely put my lips above it just to breathe and get a break, but I had already given up," he said.

He was later saved by one of his friends, whom he had tried to signal to earlier. Momoa came out of this harrowing experience with a few injuries and a newfound sense of life, which, more or less, influenced him to make healthier life choices moving forward. "The moment I came out, I never smoked again. I just died. I tried and tried, but I couldn't do it again because I just, I gave up," he admitted. "Like, I gave up my life."

Jason Momoa was violently assaulted in 2008

Whether it be Jason Momoa's signature long locks or his collection of meaningful Polynesian tattoos, he's been forthcoming about his unique fashion sense. One thing that became his identity, however, was his eyebrow scar that, similar to the late Michael K. Williams, accentuated his ruggedness. Despite how cool it may appear, it came from a series of events that were traumatic for the then-budding actor.

Fresh from his inclusion in "Stargate: Atlantis," Momoa reportedly got into a verbal altercation with a man named Dominic Bando at a West Hollywood café in 2008 (via TMZ). Their confrontation quickly got physical, leading to Bando allegedly hitting Momoa in the face with a beer glass. The glass shattered, causing lacerations all over the left side of Momoa's face. As a result, Momoa had to get 140 stitches from his eyebrows to his left cheek.

Luckily, Momoa found solace after the incident, as his assaulter was reprimanded. Bando pleaded not guilty, with his attorney noting that there are multiple sides to a story, given the injuries his client sustained to his hand, per NBC Los Angeles. In 2009, the assailant was found guilty of assault with a deadly weapon and sentenced to five years in prison (via Los Angeles Times).

Jason Momoa had financial woes after a breakout role in 'Game of Thrones'

Despite starring in cult classics like "Baywatch" and "Stargate: Atlantis," Jason Momoa never quite had a true breakout role until he portrayed the Dothraki tyrant, Khal Drogo, in "Game of Thrones." It proved his prominence as a world-class Hollywood star, widening the possibility of transitioning into rugged action roles. It seemed within his grasp to a regular viewer of his performances, but that reality was surprisingly far from attainable after his 11-episode stint on the show. According to Momoa, he had a hard time booking acting gigs.

During his interview with InStyle, Momoa stated that he could not financially sustain himself or his family after "Game of Thrones." "I mean, we were starving after 'Game of Thrones,'" he recalled. "I couldn't get work. It's very challenging when you have babies and you're completely in debt." As for why this was the case, Momoa appeared on "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon" and joked that his role as Drogo coincidentally affected his career positively and negatively. He proved himself capable of playing a rough ruler, but he accidentally narrowed the scope of what directors thought he could do in other genres. "Not a lot of people thought I spoke English," he quipped. "It was very challenging. It's like, what do you do with Drogo? I mean, you're not going to put him in a comedy. ... He's pigeon-holed a little bit."

He got knocked unconscious while working on 'Braven' in 2018

From choreographed fight scenes and risky motorcycle stunts to car chases, Jason Momoa is among the few action stars who, on occasion, will step in to do his own stunts. This Tom Cruise-esque habit adopted a level of respect for his fortitude while filming physically taxing scenes. It also made him quite familiar with sustaining injuries on set — one of which ended with him unconscious while filming "Braven" in 2018. Momoa portrayed the bow-wielding Joe Braven, whose utmost mission is to ensure the safety of his family from a militia of drug smugglers.

In an interview with Yahoo, he shared that he was accidentally knocked out by one of their stunt guys on set. This took place during a choreographed fight scene in a bar, where Momoa noted that he was "blindsided" by his dance partner. He was quickly rushed to a hospital and woke up unaware of what had happened to him. Luckily, the movie's filming schedule wasn't pushed back too much as he recovered shortly after. "It was pretty gnarly," he explained. "I literally thought a light fell from the sky and something happened or a chair hit me because I was moving toward the punch and I couldn't even see it. It just hit me on the side by the temple. The lights went out and I was like, 'I can't see!' Head trauma is a serious thing."

He sustained numerous injuries filming the sequel to 'Aquaman'

Jason Momoa's work on "Braven" wouldn't be the last of his extensive history with injuries. Two thousand and eighteen marked one of his most popular works to date in "Aquaman" after portraying the hero in "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" and "Justice League." His portrayal of the well-known DC superhero was immensely successful, allowing Momoa to follow this up with "Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom" in 2023. The filming process was physically grueling, as Momoa sustained multiple injuries.

During his appearance on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" in 2021, Momoa listed the numerous ailments he was facing at the time, such as a scratched cornea and a hernia, all of which he jokingly attributed to old age. "I messed up my eyes and just got something in it that kind of cut it up, and then I got to get surgery for a hernia. I got ribs out. I'm just getting beat up," he quipped. "But it's going to be a great movie! You're going to love it!" DeGeneres pointed out that this was a constant for Momoa when he films blockbuster action movies, to which he agreed. "I just kind of give it, yeah," he responded. "I love my job, and I get a little too excited, and then, you know, the age thing. I'm an aging superhero right now."

Jason Momoa grieved the passing of a superfan months after meeting him

Jason Momoa has always been devoted to his fanbase. This couldn't be more evident in 2020, when he took to Instagram to upload a video of himself talking to "Aquaman" superfan Danny Sheehan, an 8-year-old cancer patient who went viral for his love of the aquatic superhero. In 2017, Sheehan was diagnosed with a rare brain tumor known as Pineoblastoma and Leptomeningeal Disease, another aggressive form of cancer that affects the spinal cord. "I saw his video online that made me want to get in touch and FaceTime him and spend some time talking to him," he wrote.

Momoa took a liking to the boy and even went as far as to gift Sheehan his own personal life-size "Aquaman" trident. The "Aquaman" actor also supported Sheehan's family in his battle with cancer. Unfortunately, Sheehan died in 2021, just under a year after meeting Momoa. The unfortunate news prompted Momoa to publicly mourn the death of his 8-year-old friend through a heartfelt post on Instagram. "I just found out this heartbreaking news. All my Aloha to this beautiful Ohana," Momoa wrote. "Love u baby boy rest in [peace]. You will live in my heart. I dedicate "Aquaman 2" to you lil angel [sic] ..."

Jason Momoa and Lisa Bonet separated in 2022

Since meeting in 2005, Jason Momoa has lived out his childhood dreams by getting into a relationship with his longtime crush, "Cosby Show" actor Lisa Bonet. Momoa and Bonet had two kids and got married in 2017, after 12 years of dating. Unfortunately, their marriage took a turn for the worse in 2022 when Momoa and Bonet announced that they were getting a divorce.

In a joint statement posted on Instagram, the two shared that they were separating (via Today). "We have all felt the squeeze and changes of these transformational times," they wrote. "A revolution is unfolding ~ and our family is of no exception... feeling and growing from the seismic shifts occurring. And so ~ We share our family news: That we are parting ways in marriage [sic]."

According to a source, this was expected as the two had been drifting apart (via E! News). "Jason is very focused on his career and wants to work. He has found success and it's driving him and is very fulfilling," they said. "Lisa wants to be in LA and is not interested in going on location for long periods of time with him." The terms of Momoa and Bonet's divorce settlement came out in January 2024, and the two officially divorced just six months later.

Jason Momoa lost a close friend in 2023

Jason Momoa is an advocate for numerous causes, including cancer. Given his prior relationship with superfan Danny Sheehan, it makes sense that he uses his platform to bring awareness to the resources cancer survivors need. Another likely inspiration for his views on cancer comes from his longstanding friendship with Travis Snyder, a sufferer of acute myeloid leukemia and owner of The Color Run, a 5K event.

In a 2022 interview with People, promoting their work with Be The Match Registry, the two spoke about how they became close friends. "We met through happenstance and mutual friends after my first cancer battle in 2015," Snyder told the publication. "I think in the aftermath of treatment I was very focused on living every day with purpose and my heart was open and Jason wasn't quite as busy then and he lives with such a big giving heart and Aloha, we just connected instantly [sic]." From 2015 onward, their friendship blossomed into a full-blown brotherhood, making Snyder's death in 2023 so heartbreaking.

After a long diagnosis with leukemia, Snyder died due to complications, prompting Momoa to commemorate his friend's life through a heartfelt Instagram post. "We wanted to get old together. My heart is broken," he wrote. "I love you, brother. We lost a great one. Live aloha, everyone; kiss your Ohana, squeeze them tight."

He and his family were forced to evacuate their home in Hawaii amidst a historic flood

Jason Momoa's love for Hawaii spans far, from his social media to his fictional counterparts. Although Momoa has since raised a few eyebrows regarding his living situation, Hawaii was always home to him, as well as to his kids and girlfriend, Adria Arjona. Their home life, however, was abruptly interrupted in March, as a historic flood throughout the state caused Momoa to evacuate, with uncertainty about how it might affect his lifelong home.

These were record-breaking floods, marking it as the worst natural disaster Hawaii has seen in the last 20 years, with various areas facing the brunt of the damage. Momoa remained relatively active throughout his local community, helping companies like Zippys provide food for those affected by the floods. Momoa's home was seemingly no exception as he and his family lived near O'ahu's North Shore. This was one of the many areas that sustained major environmental damage. Momoa took to his Instagram story to update his followers on the well-being of himself and his family. In the video, Momoa stated that they are fleeing their home in Hawaii for their safety (via People). "I got my family with me. We got out of the North Shore ... our power went off," he explained. "We're safe for now, but there [are] a lot of people who [aren't], so we're sending all our love."
