Trump's Brutal Ousting Of Pam Bondi Was Harsher Than It Seemed, According To Insiders
President Donald Trump announced he was firing Pam Bondi from her post as US Attorney General in a Truth Social post on Thursday, April 2. "Pam Bondi is a Great American Patriot and a loyal friend, who faithfully served as my Attorney General over the past year," his announcement began. He claimed that during her time at the head of the Department of Justice, crime in the country drastically decreased, then he explained that she'd be moving on to a job in the private sector. Trump named Todd Blanche Acting Attorney General. Considering that he was firing her, it was a pretty innocuous post. But The New York Times reported that, behind the scenes, the situation was more tense than it appeared.
Trump announced her replacement on social media and made it very clear she wouldn't be moving to a new post in his administration. The key to surviving in the president's second cabinet is inflating his huge ego. Bondi certainly tried her best to do that, but her tendency to praise Trump at inappropriate times caused some of the most bizarre moments of her tenure as Attorney General.
No amount of clinging to Trump could erase Bondi's failures from his mind
Donald Trump usually doesn't speak against members of his administration in public. But, as Pam Bondi's blunders became more obvious and she continually failed to prosecute his political enemies like former FBI Director James Comey and New York Attorney General Letitia James, Trump reportedly had no problem bashing her behind closed doors. According to a Wall Street Journal report in January 2026, the president has described Bondi as "weak and ineffective" to some of his aides. The situation only got worse for her when she went before the House Judiciary Committee in February to defend her handling of the Epstein Files with ridiculous deflections. "The Dow is over 50,000 now!" Bondi said at one point. Per The New York Times, she also refused to make eye contact with Epstein's victims. Her behavior at the hearing resulted in criticism from Republicans and Democrats alike.
Per The Times' April 2 report on the ousting, Trump's March 2026 firing of Kristi Noem, the former U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security, signaled to Bondi that her job was in trouble, too. She tried to save herself by sticking to Trump's side like glue. She was supporting Trump as recently as Wednesday, April 1, 2026 during his speech about the Iran War. But no amount of performative support in public could save her.
