These Stars Known For Their Red Hair Are Actually Natural Blondes

Redheads know their hair color is rare. It's even rarer than it seems when we look at the folks in Hollywood. There are some famous redheads whose fiery shade doesn't actually come naturally. Believe it or not, some celebs who famously rock red locks are actually natural blondes. 

Sticking to your natural hair color is often an easy way to avoid picking the wrong color for you or opting for something that's a pain to maintain. Yet, your natural color isn't always automatically your best look. There are some celebs who actually look better without their natural hair color, and some redheaded stars definitely fit that bill. It's hard to imagine some of the most iconic redhead characters being blonde. That's why we're glad these actors tried red on for size. While they say blondes have more fun, it's clear some blondes actually have a much better time with red locks.

Emma Stone is one of Hollywood's most famous redheads, but she actually gets her iconic red hair out of a bottle. Stone's longtime hairstylist Tracey Cunningham first made her a redhead for "Superbad" in 2007, and she keeps returning to the shade ever since. Cunningham told Refinery29, "Despite the fact that her natural color is blonde, the red suits her so well," while noting "she looks like a redhead." 

"Almost everyone in Emma's family has red hair except her..." she added. "I think there's something about those genetics that make the red... look so gorgeous with her skin tone and her eyes..."

Like Emma Stone, Amy Adams' features and coloring just work with red hair. While she has a bit of red in her natural color, it's much more blonde than what we've seen her sporting over the years. "It's kind of a strawberry blonde," Adams told Vogue of her natural hair color, adding, "But like most blondes, the blonde has gone kind of ashy, so I assist it with the red." This gives her a more vibrant shade that makes her features pop.

Julia Roberts' hair has gone through quite an evolution since she first arrived on the scene. Yet, it's her auburn hair color that fans have envied the most. While the dark red shade looks stunning on the star, on "Late Night with David Letterman" in 1989, she explained, "My hair's naturally blonde — kind of dark blonde." But, when she auditioned for "Mystic Pizza," she said she was told she was "physically completely wrong" for the role. So, Roberts decided to switch things up with her hair, which landed her both her breakout role and a signature color.

Kate Winslet's titanic beauty in the iconic 1997 film went down in cinema history, and her long, red locks played a big role in that. Yet Winslet's fiery curls in "Titanic" weren't natural. Since then, she's been a shade of blonde that's closer to what grows from her head. "...I remember the first conversation with ['Titanic' director] Jim Cameron about [Rose's] hair color," she told Elle, noting that he wanted "an intense, unusual red, and I was very excited about that." Unfortunately, it then took nearly two years to revert Winslet's hair to its natural shade.

Watching Sophie Turner in "Game of Thrones," it's hard to imagine her natural hair color is anything other than that bold, beautiful red shade. In reality, though, Turner's natural color looks more like a Targaryen. "I feel different ways about each hair color," she told Refinery29. "With my red, I feel very empowered, because with every character that I've played that has red hair, they've been such a strong and powerful character...I feel more at home when I come back to my blonde hair; it also makes me feel a bit cooler and edgier."

Bella Thorne has tried quite a few hair colors on for size over the years but most people associate her with her with the light, bright red shade she often sports. "A lot of people don't know I'm not actually a redhead. I'm a blonde," the star told Allure. "I dyed it for 'Big Love.'" Clearly, red just felt right. According to Thorne, when it was time to go back to blonde for a role, "I don't know why, but I had a breakdown and so overreacted. I wanted to go back to red."

Can you imagine if Joan from "Mad Men" was blonde? Neither can we. The iconic dye job that made the character who she was also made Hendricks one of Hollywood's popular redheads. Interestingly, it was some of Hollywood's top redheads that came before her who inspired her to go red in the first place. "I was a blonde, but I loved Ann-Margret and Lucille Ball, so my mom suggested I change my color to red with a rinse," she told InStyle. Clearly, the color fit her so well that she stuck with it.

Red hair fit Cynthia Nixon's iconic "Sex and the City" character, Miranda Hobbes, perfectly, but it took work to achieve. "I used to have to dye my hair red to play Miranda because I'm a natural blonde. Now, as I get older, I dye it blonde because... well, you know," Nixon once joked on X. Nixon told Marie Claire, "I like the red very much... I certainly feel like I look like myself... but it's a lot of work to maintain," so she always returns to the blonde ASAP after going red for roles.
