These days, Dr. Phil's wife, Robin McGraw, exudes total fashion confidence. Her red carpet dresses take the word vibrant to new heights, and her on-screen appearances stand out because of her perfectly curated wardrobe. Even her Instagram page exhibits dozens of photos showcasing her unique style choices. That said, it took a long time for McGraw to reach her current status as a true Hollywood fashionista.

Before Phil became a regular guest on Oprah Winfrey's talk show back in 1998, the McGraw family lived a fairly quiet life. While Phil ran a small consulting firm focused on trial preparation, McGraw raised their two children: Jay and Jordan McGraw. The transformation of oldest son Jay and musician younger son Jordan is proof of her dedication as a homemaker. During this season of McGraw's life, she often ignored her fashion needs to focus on caring for her and Dr. Phil's two sons instead.

When "Dr. Phil" gained popularity among Americans, however, all that changed. McGraw finally began to explore her sense of style, and she wanted other women to do the same. As she wrote in her book, "What's Age Got To Do With It?" (via Today), "That's why I say to you if you love your children — and I know you do — take care of their mother first." Over the years, she has grown more comfortable with wearing increasingly expressive clothes. These days, her outfits are known for being somewhat edgy, elegant, feminine, and totally fun.

Robin McGraw kept things simple at her wedding to Dr. Phil

When Robin McGraw and Dr. Phil married in 1976, they didn't have wealth — let alone fame. Because of this, they didn't splurge on her wedding dress. As she would later tell Us Weekly, "We have a wedding picture that we were looking at earlier and my wedding dress cost $100. I had to put it in layaway back then and pay $5 a week for it." Nonetheless, McGraw stunned in the billowy white gown.

Pre-fame, Robin McGraw kept her wardrobe simple

Before Dr. Phil rose to fame in the 1990s, his wife, Robin McGraw, didn't dig too deep into the world of fashion. Old family photographs on her Instagram show that she dressed simply before stepping into the spotlight. One shot of McGraw, Phil, and their son, Jay McGraw, in the 1980s features the matriarch in a simple white blouse and navy skirt. The only special element in her outfit was a pink ribbon tied at her waist. McGraw has since admitted that her focus was not on clothes.

As her kids grew up, Robin McGraw ignored notions of self-care

Robin McGraw has confessed that motherhood prevented her from prioritizing herself — a sentiment that showed in her fashion choices when her kids were young. Dr. Phil has shared photographs of his wife pre-fame on Facebook. Shots show her wearing run-of-the-mill flowery T-shirts and ill-fitting dresses to family events and photoshoots. On one occasion, she sported a red frock with overly baggy sleeves. The piece did nothing to showcase her figure and left her waistline obscured among piles of fabric. At this point, McGraw's transformation had not begun.

In 2002, Robin McGraw wore a little black dress

When Dr. Phil began appearing on Oprah Winfrey's talk show in 1998, his wife, Robin McGraw, decided to lean into the fashion world. That became even more true in 2002 when Phil's show, "Dr. Phil," hit the small screen. At a Paramount anniversary gala that year, McGraw wore a low-cut black dress that flattered her figure. While clearly a step up from past outfits, this ensemble did little to help her shine. The biggest issue was a beige scarf accessory, which McGraw used to shield her body from the cameras.

At the 2002 Emmys, Robin McGraw wore a blue gown

Dr. Phil's wife definitely didn't glam up her look overnight, but in 2002, Robin McGraw initiated her stunning transformation from a normal citizen to a fashionista. She appeared at the 54th Emmys in a sparkling blue gown that emphasized her bust and waistline. McGraw looked regal in the eye-grabbing shade. Even as she posed alongside her famous talk show host friend, Oprah Winfrey, who wore a butter-yellow princess gown, McGraw proved she could hold her own at a major style event.

She blended into the background at the 2004 Christmas in Washington dress rehearsals

Robin McGraw's appearance at the 2002 Emmys may have hinted at her fashion potential, but it took years for her to come into her own. At the dress rehearsals for the 2004 "Christmas in Washington" special, McGraw played it safe, opting for a pair of dark jeans, a navy sweater, and a tiger-print scarf. While this ensemble was considered fashionable daily wear at the time, it wasn't necessarily something one would wear to rehearsal — especially an up-and-coming star.

For the next year's Christmas in Washington, Robin McGraw really shone

Robin McGraw may have played it safe leading up to the 2004 "Christmas in Washington" event, but in 2005, she took things up a notch — or three. For the main event, McGraw went for a little black dress with a super feminine corset top. She cinched her waist with a brown pearl ribbon that perfectly matched a flared skirt. For the 2005 dress rehearsals, she wore a sparkly black sweater and silky salmon scarf — a far cry from the casual outfit she'd worn the year before.

Robin McGraw stunned in a red top while presenting at the Country Music Awards

From Christmas 2005 forward, Robin McGraw oozed confidence and personal style. She began to take more fashion risks. At the 2006 Annual Academy of Country Music Awards, McGraw leaned into the theme by wearing a pair of flared blue jeans and a silky red tank top. She accessorized her look with attention-grabbing items like a gold chain belt and a wristful of gold bangle bracelets. Here, McGraw proved she could comfortably experiment with different looks while having fun with a theme.

Robin McGraw embraced the color red

As the year 2006 unfolded, Robin McGraw repeatedly donned red outfits. Following her appearance at the Country Music Awards, she continued to don this eye-popping shade. At that year's Museum of Television and Radio Gala, McGraw stepped out in a fun red dress that boasted a cool rose petal pattern. She also attended her son Jay McGraw's wedding in a red mother-of-the-groom dress that maximized the celebratory feel. 2006 was clearly the year McGraw finally allowed herself to stand out from the crowd.

For Robin McGraw, 2007 was the year of the plunging neckline

Following Robin McGraw's foray into red, she began experimenting with plunging necklines throughout 2007 — and she looked great! At the 14th Race to Erase MS charity event, she wore a little black dress with a rather revealing neckline. The corset top flattered her shape, and the zipper at the front added a risqué touch. That same year, McGraw wore another low-cut black dress to a panel for Elle. She also sported a black dress with a low sweetheart neckline to the Emmys.

Robin McGraw proved that her penchant for red was there to stay

Just because Robin McGraw spent most of 2007 in low-cut little black dresses does not mean that she forgot her passion for red. During the 2007 Christmas in Washington event, McGraw wrapped up her year in a unique scarlet gown. Like many of the pieces that she sported in 2006, this dress made a statement with its bright red tones. It also incorporated the more risqué necklines that defined her wardrobe at the time, with cutouts framing her chest. McGraw had gone full Hollywood!

Robin McGraw began to experiment with earth tones

After years of leaning into bold dresses, Robin McGraw began toning things down. At the 2008 David Foster dinner, McGraw wore neutral shades, specifically a beige lace dress and a matching brown scarf. Although these colors have not remained a major part of McGraw's wardrobe since that day, her choice to incorporate them at all reflects a willingness to experiment. For that specific occasion, McGraw looked fantastic in the colors that dominate the quiet luxury trend. The look may not have been a staple, but it was definitely cutting-edge.

She tried an unorthodox color combo at the 2009 Emmys

Robin McGraw's fashion experimentation did not end with the earth tones she wore in 2008. The following year, she appeared at the Emmys in a shiny bodycon dress and high heels. The outfit stood out for its colors that don't usually go together. The dress itself combined a reddish-brown top with a turquoise skirt. McGraw's accessories complicated the palette even further by integrating a yellow clutch into the mix. This outfit was an early sign that McGraw was ready to find her sense of style.

She got funky at Natalie Cole's 60th bday

Robin McGraw's interest in unusual color combinations definitely crept into 2010. During that year, Dr. Phil's wife attended Natalie Cole's 60th birthday party. At the event, she wore an ensemble that included clashing animal prints. For her top, McGraw sported a faux cheetah print shirt that incorporated the gold and black tones traditionally associated with the animal. She matched it with a funky red and black cheetah print skirt, creating an unusual contrast. This ensemble, while unorthodox, hinted at McGraw's increased willingness to take fashion risks.

Robin McGraw looked ultra confident in a black party dress

It was arguably not until Robin McGraw was invited to speak at O! in 2012 that she finally stumbled upon her sense of style. At this event, McGraw looked totally different from how she had in the past. Wearing a lacy black dress with a fringe skirt, McGraw blended some elements of punk fashion into an outfit that otherwise screamed "baby doll." The ensemble was very feminine but also a little bit edgy. McGraw seemed incredibly comfortable in the outfit — like someone who had just discovered her fashion voice.

She leaned into punk styles more fully

By the time the movie "Selma," hit the big screens in 2014, Robin McGraw was ready to embrace her fashion instincts. She attended the movie's premiere in a sparkly black flapper dress that also ushered in punk overtones. The piece's knee-length, fringed skirt was very 1920s, while its netted lace sleeves felt totally punk. McGraw brought the look together with black snakeskin heels and bright red nails, creating a moment that was edgy without revealing a ton of skin. Once again, she looked amazingly confident and ready to rock.

Dr. Phil's wife leaned into more unique lace combos

As Robin McGraw's fashion tastes evolved, so did her outfits. At the 2015 Broadcasting and Cable Hall of Fame Awards, McGraw continued to lean into her punk-inspired clothing, sporting a black lace top and sheer black tights to match. With a faux nude fabric beneath the lace top, McGraw stunned in one of her most inappropriate outfits. That said, she paired the risqué piece with a more conservative white skirt. The final result was an outfit that was somehow both edgy and demure.

In 2017, Robin McGraw began embracing prints

In 2017, Robin McGraw took her slightly rebellious fashion tastes to a whole new level. At that year's David Foster Foundation gala, McGraw wore a slightly gothic black baby doll dress with a transparent lace top and tulle-forward skirt. Unlike some of her previous dresses, however, this one included a red, white, and green floral pattern that really made her outfit pop. McGraw paired the ensemble with black heels, a green snakeskin clutch, and a beige bracelet. Her bright red nails added to the gothic effect.

Robin McGraw went all in on animal prints

Just because Robin McGraw has rocked some punk outfits does not mean she is married to one style. Dr. Phil's wife has also been spotted in some gorgeous animal prints. In 2019, McGraw was photographed on the streets of New York in an orange tiger print dress. She matched the piece with black sheer tights and boots — maintaining her typically moody style. This fun combination of dark clothes and animal prints shows that McGraw was still interested in experimenting with new looks.

Dr. Phil's wife went full Victorian at the Hollywood Walk of Fame

When Dr. Phil was inducted into the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2020, his wife, Robin McGraw, was keen on showing her support. Dressed to the max in a beige and black striped dress, McGraw looked like the picture of modern Victorian femininity. While the length of her dress — which fell just below the knee — would have been a little short for that generation, the billowed sleeves and high ruffled neckline looked straight out of a scene from "Jane Eyre."

The gothic rose dress she wore to the Thalia Gala was simply iconic

At the 2022 Thalians Winter gala, Robin McGraw brought together all her favorite clothing elements in an outfit that deserves icon status. Wearing a long-sleeved, high-neck dress, McGraw clearly embraced elements of Victorian styling. In addition, though, the dress incorporated a gothic feel with a large rose and vine pattern that crawled across the fabric. It also felt totally edgy, thanks to a nude background that gave the piece a faux transparent look.

Robin McGraw embraced warmer tones on an Italian adventure

Just because Robin McGraw looks great in all things gothic does not mean she stays 100% true to this style. On a summer trip to Pisa, Italy, McGraw embraced warmer colors. Dressed in a pink and magenta patterned sweater and a pair of loose black pants, she appeared ready to dive into Italy's more colorful side. While the outfit looked comfortable, it also included enough formal elements — such as gold buttons — to remain appropriate for a nice dinner out on the town.

She was less formal for grandma duties

Robin McGraw may no longer be the same girl who wore the $100 wedding dress back in 1976, but that doesn't mean that she's always red carpet ready. When she's hanging out with her grandkids, McGraw has been known to keep her outfits simple. A photo she shared on Instagram shows her decorating a Christmas tree with one of her littles. Dressed in a black shirt, jeans, and matching boots, McGraw proved that she hadn't lost her casual touch. She even donned a pair of glasses.

Robin McGraw was even more casual in her support of son Jordan McGraw

Robin McGraw's second son, Jordan McGraw, is making a name for himself as a country singer, and the proud mama isn't afraid to wear casual clothes to support him. A photo shared on McGraw's Instagram shows her wearing a green sweatshirt with her son's name on it. Although she attempted to bring the outfit together by matching the piece with a green hair ribbon, she looked like a total soccer mom in all the best ways. We love seeing McGraw show off her casual side.

Robin McGraw embraced color for a seaside adventure

Although Robin McGraw has been known to rock darker colors, she's not afraid to go a bit more vibrant from time to time. During a sunny seaside adventure that she posted about on Instagram, McGraw wore an open-back dress. The piece boasted a white base that had been decorated with a pretty gold, blue, green, and red pattern. She accessorized it with what appeared to be a very fancy watch and a pair of black shades. All in all, this outfit showcased McGraw's ability to dip into color on occasion.
