Fashion Expert Reveals Carey Mulligan's Oscar Dress Cost A Small Fortune

British actress, Carey Mulligan came to the Oscars 2021 dressed like a modern-day, very empowered, and wonderfully intimidating Disney princess. Mulligan, who was up for best actress for her stunning performance in "Promising Young Woman," did not collect a golden statute. She was, nonetheless the living embodiment of one. The actress's stunning get-up was one of the reasons Variety could celebrate that the 2021 Oscars brought "fashion back in a big way" to the red carpet.

Los Angeles-based makeup artist Georgie Eisdell (who has also worked on the likes of Dakota Fanning, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Anya Taylor Joy, if Eisdell's Instagram is anything to go by) advertised the details behind Mulligan's look on Instagram. They include Chanel, Chanel, followed by ... Chanel: from foundations, bronzing creams, and sheer powders, to eye shadows, mascaras, eyebrow pencils, and blushes. As per Style Caster, The Great Gatsby actress paired her gown with a pair of glamorous Sophia Webster heels. But it was Carey Mulligan's two-piece bandeau top and skirt that took our breath away. The List talked exclusively to fashion expert and TV personality, Cindy Conroy, who gave us the details about the actress's Valentino get-up.

Inside Carey Mulligan's luxurious Oscars get-up

"In a quintessentially fun number, Carey Mulligan set mouths ajar in glittering gold," Cindy Conroy told The List. "Decadent and scrumptious, the Valentino Couture two-piece reimagines the line between classic sophistication and modern edginess." As for its price tag? "I wouldn't be surprised if this couture treasure rings in around $8,000," Conroy guessed. $8,000 is, of course, pennies next to the $6 million worth of diamonds that Zendaya donned on the red carpet. Conroy didn't take a guess at what Mulligan's  jewelry cost, but Town & Country says that they were Cartier emeralds.)

Twitter, meanwhile, seems to have come to a rare, near-unanimous consensus that Mulligan's gold sequined balloon skirt and matching bandeau top were dazzling. To quote one entranced social media user: "If Carey Mulligan doesn't win an Oscar in this dress I'm going to need her to wear it to every Oscars until she does. This is a VICTORY dress" (via Twitter).
