The Truth About Mina Starsiak Hawk's Sister, Kelsy Spaeth

Things are changing on HGTV's "Good Bones." The show, led by mother and daughter duo Karen E. Laine and Mina Starsiak Hawk, has been wildly popular since its premiere in 2016. According to Discovery, Season 5 alone had over 22 million viewers. Behind the scenes, though, things have been shifting around for Two Chicks and a Hammer, especially now that Laine has announced her retirement.

In 2019, Laine announced via an Instragram post that she would be leaving Two Chicks and a Hammer. Now, as the show enters its sixth season, Laine is taking a step back from the show as well. In an exclusive interview with The List, Hawk explained that her mom would be focusing just on landscape design and DIY projects. "Mom's really having her moment to shine," she explained.

Thankfully, Laine's youngest daughter, Kelsy Spaeth, was able to step in to help fill some of the gaps.

Kelsy Spaeth became involved with Good Bones

Kelsy Spaeth is no stranger to long-time fans of "Good Bones." In Season 3 of the show, the building of the house Spaeth now shares with her husband was the focus of an episode (via Distractify). In fact, Karen Laine's other children have made appearances on "Good Bones" over the years, too, including her son Tad. But Kelsy's role, especially off-screen, has been instrumental in helping keep the company and show moving forward, especially as Laine's own role transitions.

In 2018, Spaeth took on the role of Chief Business Officer of Two Chicks and a Hammer. This same year, she also had one of her first appearances on "Good Bones." Like her mother, Spaeth lacked a formal design or real estate background. Before she was an HGTV star, Laine was a full-time lawyer and actually continued working with clients up through 2017, according to Cheat Sheet.

In an exclusive interview with The List, Mina Starsiak Hawk talked about another job for the company she hired her sister for. "We did a special episode about [her new store, Two Chicks Distrct Co.], the build out of it, and all the different things it's gone through." The episode, Spaeth teased, is full of their organic drama — and the store flooded the day Spaeth was hired to run it.

Kelsy Spaeth has a strong work ethic

When looking at Spaeth's resume, it's clear she also has the same strong work ethic as the rest of her family. After leaving Two Chicks and a Hammer, according to her LinkedIn, Kelsy Spaeth began work as a Senior Project Manager at Studio Science. But even before working with her mom and sister, Spaeth had worked as first a sales associate then district sales leader at PepsiCo.

Spaeth, who has a degree in psychology and french from Indiana University Bloomington, actually got her start working at a pizza restaurant and as a help desk intern while she was still in college. Once she graduated, she accepted the sales associate position at PepsiCo.

Besides having a strong work ethic, focusing on family appears to be another trait Karen Laine's children all share. In November of 2020, Spaeth married her long-time boyfriend, Neil — the same man she had appeared in that Season 3 episode of "Good Bones" with. According to their wedding profile on "The Knot," the couple had been dating for three years before he finally proposed to her in Paris.
