Tragic Celebrity Car Accidents We Still Think About

From glitzy red carpets to luxurious lifestyles and constant fanfare, there's a lot that separates celebrities from common folk who lead "regular" private lives. Some larger-than-life celebs may even seem superhuman, but at the end of the day, they are indeed humans like the rest of us. For all the top-tier medical care and security privileges they can afford, famous people are not immortal. And the various examples of road accidents involving public figures, some serious and others downright fatal, serve as tragic reminders of that. 

Some collisions became defining moments in these celebrities' lives. James Dean's death on the road, for instance, became an inseparable part of his cultural legacy. Princess Diana and Grace Kelly, two beloved royals separated by countries and decades, also died following car crashes that became stories of their own. In other cases, accidents may have faded from public memory but left physical and emotional traumas that still affect these celebrities. Here are some tragic celebrity car accidents the world won't forget. 

Among the lesser-known things about James Dean was that besides being a generational acting talent, he was also an amateur racer. This need for speed fit in well with the suave jacket-clad, angsty rebel image he had built for himself as his career took off in the '50s. He had a swanky collection of vehicles, including his prized Porsche 550 Spyder, which he notoriously nicknamed Little B*****d. In fact, he bought his legendary car just days before his death. 

On September 30, 1955, a 24-year-old Dean headed out from Los Angeles to a race in Salinas, California. He was driving along Route 446, with Porsche mechanic Rolf Wütherich in the passenger seat, when a Ford Tudor came into his path and caused a head-on collision. "That guy up there's gotta stop; he'll see us," were apparently Dean's last words before the deadly impact (via Vanity Fair). 

The actor, who was just weeks away from the premiere of "Rebel Without a Cause," was rushed to hospital with critical injuries but was pronounced dead on arrival; Wütherich survived the accident, but would die in another car crash decades later. Dean's death remained a subject of enduring intrigue for years, thanks in no small part to a related urban legend around his car being cursed. 

Matthew Broderick was fresh off the fame of his landmark film "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" when he found himself in the middle of a tragedy so profound that it would affect his personal life for years to come. Broderick was vacationing in Northern Ireland in August 1987 with then-girlfriend Jennifer Grey when he took their rented car out on the road in County Fermanagh. The actor erroneously veered his vehicle into the wrong lane and collided with an oncoming Volvo that was carrying a mother-daughter duo. Both died on the spot. 

Broderick, who was badly injured in the crash and spent weeks in hospital, said at the time that the fateful day was a blur to him. "What I first remember is waking up in the hospital, with a very strange feeling going on in my leg," he said (via New York Post). The Hollywood star was fined $175 by an Ireland court. Per the outlet, the family forgave the actor, and in the early 2000s they were in talks to meet up with him for "closure."

In a 2022 interview with ET, Grey noted that she was technically the only witness to the accident because Broderick was rendered unconscious. "It's very hard to describe when you have a near-death experience and are present for the death of other people," she said. "[Broderick] was a great driver, and nobody was drinking. It was just an accident. And it was tragic, and I think about the family in Ireland all the time."

The car crash that killed Princess Diana in 1997 has been one of the most talked-about episodes in royal history. In fact, so sensational was the tragedy that even decades after its occurrence, disputes and rumors still persist about Diana's death. It happened in Paris, where King Charles III's ex-wife was on the road with her then-partner Dodi Fayed, going from the Ritz to his apartment after having escaped a swarm of paparazzi at the hotel. The couple was accompanied by a bodyguard named Trevor Rees-Jones (who would be the sole survivor of the crash) and Henri Paul, a Ritz staffer who was behind the wheel of the Mercedes. 

Their ploy to avoid attention wasn't successful, and paparazzi eventually found and chased Diana's car, which was speeding along the Pont de l'Alma tunnel when it suffered a devastating crash. While Fayed and Paul died at the scene, the British princess was rescued from the wreckage and rushed to a local hospital. Her injuries were extensive and though attempts were made to resuscitate her, Diana died a few hours after the crash. 36 at the time, she was survived by her children Princes William and Harry, and ex-husband Charles, whom she had been divorced from for about a year before her death. The tragic event sent shockwaves across the world and the outpouring of grief for the beloved people's princess was, and continues to be, overwhelming. 

A road accident threatened to derail Tracy Morgan's life back in 2014. He had finished up a show in Delaware and was on his way back to New York City, accompanied by a bunch of his associates and comedian friends in his limo, when he reached the New Jersey turnpike late at night. It was here that a Wal-Mart tractor-trailer rammed into Morgan's car and consequently led to a crash involving four other vehicles. 

Having suffered the point of impact the hardest, Morgan's SUV overturned and caused several casualties. The "Saturday Night Live" star was among those who were gravely injured in the accident, while his friend and mentor James McNair – better known as Jimmy Mack — died at the scene. "I live with that to this day, 'cause I asked him to be there. It was my tour," Morgan recalled to Oprah Winfrey on a 2016 episode of "Super Soul Sunday." "The rest of my career is dedicated to him." 

The aftermath of the accident wasn't any easier for Morgan, who had broken several of his bones, was in a coma for days, and remained bound to a wheelchair for months after. In between learning how to walk and get his life back on track again, he also navigated a lawsuit against Wal-Mart, which was eventually settled for a reported $90 million. 

Caitlyn Jenner landed in the middle of controversy after being involved in a multiple-car collision on the Pacific Coast Highway in California that led to a woman's death in 2015. The Olympic gold medalist and reality star was behind the wheel of a Cadillac when she rammed into a Lexus from behind, sending it off-course into oncoming traffic where it hit a Hummer. The driver of the Lexus was 69-year-old Kim Howe, who died in the accident. 

"It is a devastating tragedy and I cannot pretend to imagine what this family is going through at this time," Jenner then said in a statement. It was reported that the reality TV star had been driving slower than the speed limit, also deemed unsafe, and barely managed to hit the brakes before making contact with the tail end of the Lexus. 

Jenner escaped without injuries and official charges but found herself in a legal bind that stretched on for years. She was first sued by the deceased's family over claims of wrongful death; the lawsuit was eventually dismissed but, as CBS News reported in 2018, Jenner paid a settlement of $800,000 to the bereaved. Others who claimed to have been injured in the accident also sued Jenner. 

Grace Kelly's death came as a huge blow not just to Hollywood, of which she had been a significant part during the Golden Age, but also to the royal fraternity that knew her as Princess Grace of Monaco. The 1982 tragedy predated Princess Diana's sensational crash by many years, making it among the first such royal tragedies involving devastating car accidents and therefore, one that drew immeasurable shock. 

Kelly was behind the wheel of her Rover in France's Côte d'Azur region, driving back to Monaco when she lost control of the vehicle and swerved off the hillside about a 100 feet down. Her daughter Princess Stephanie, then 17, was in the car with her. Reports later said that Kelly had suffered a stroke while driving, which caused the deadly accident that resulted in severe injuries for both her and her daughter. The pair was rushed to hospital, where Kelly had another brain hemorrhage and died. 

Stephanie survived the accident but for years after, had to bear the brunt of conspiracy theories that alleged that she had been driving on that fateful day — something she has vehemently denied. As she once told Paris Match (via The Guardian), "You cannot imagine the suffering I have endured, and that I endure still. So when I read in the papers that I killed my mother, it is quite simply horrible."

Renowned thrill-seeker and "Fast & Furious" star Paul Walker died in a car accident in 2013. He was in California, attending an event organized by his nonprofit Reach Out WorldWide, when tragedy struck and the Porsche his friend and racer Roger Rodas was driving crashed in the neighborhood of Valencia. As indicated in Paul Walker's autopsy report, the car had been speeding at around 100 mph before colliding into a lamppost and trees, and going up in flames; the resultant burns were so intense that they initially made identifying the movie star difficult. 

While Rodas was killed upon impact, it is believed that Walker, though severely fractured, was still breathing for a few seconds when the crash occurred. He died shortly after from the "combined effects of traumatic and thermal injuries," the autopsy stated. Considering Walker's massive global following, and the fact that he was in the middle of filming "Furious 7" when he died, the outpouring of grief from across the world was immeasurable. Also running parallel to the steady stream of tributes at the time was a publicized legal dispute the Walker family navigated against Porsche for alleged wrongful death. The case was eventually settled. 

In the late 2000s, Morgan Freeman was involved in a devastating car crash on one fateful night in Mississippi. Freeman, who was 71 at the time, was behind the wheel of a Nissan near his home in Charleston when he lost control of the vehicle and it flipped over several times. With him at the time was a woman named Demaris Meyer, to whom the car belonged and who, after dining with Freeman and their mutual friends, was heading back home with the actor. 

The 2008 accident was so severe that Freeman and Meyer, after being pried free from the vehicle using a jaws-of-life machine, had to be airlifted to the hospital. Both sustained injuries, with Freeman breaking multiple bones and undergoing nerve damage that caused persistent impairment. He now wears a compression glove to mitigate the severe damage to his left hand. "It's the fibromyalgia," he told Esquire in 2012. "Up and down the arm. That's where it gets so bad. Excruciating." Due to the lasting pain and lack of mobility, Freeman can no longer participate in physical activities like sailing and horse riding, but it hardly puts a damper on his spirits. "I play golf. I still work. And I can be pretty happy just walking the land," he said.

Back in 1990, when her success as a Latin pop singer was soaring, a horrific accident almost put Gloria Estefan's life and career in jeopardy. She was on her way to New York for a concert with her group Miami Sound Machine when the incident took place one snowy day on Interstate 380 in the Poconos. A tractor-trailer smashed into the rear end of Gloria's tour bus, which was consequently pushed into another truck ahead. 

"I opened my eyes and I'm on the floor of the bus and I am looking around and it is mayhem," the "Don't Wanna Lose You" hitmaker recalled on "Red Table Talk: The Estefans." Her husband and fellow music legend Emilio Estefan, who was also on the bus at the time, was "covered in blood," while their 9-year-old son Nayib Estefan also sustained injuries. The singer herself ended up with a broken back. "The only way I can describe it, the pain was excruciating," she said. 

Gloria wound up in a wheelchair after the near-fatal collision, temporarily paralyzed and at risk of losing her ability to walk. It took a long recovery period before she could get back on her feet again. "Three months after the accident, when I really started to see my body coming back a little bit," she said on "The Kelly Clarkson Show," recalling how the life-changing incident eventually inspired her 1991 hit "Coming Out of the Dark." 

One of Hollywood's most legendary blonde bombshells, Jayne Mansfield had audiences in a chokehold through the 1950s and '60s. She was an actor, singer, live show artist, Playboy darling, tabloid magnet, and Marilyn Monroe successor all rolled into one and, even though her star power seemed to be at its peak, there was nowhere but only higher for Mansfield to go. Her potential, unfortunately, was never fully realized, as she died at age 34 in 1967. 

Mansfield had wrapped up a show in Mississippi and, along with her three children and then-partner Sam Brody, was making her way to New Orleans for another professional engagement when the vehicle she was traveling in found itself in a deadly accident. According to The New York Times, their driver failed to see that a tractor-trailer had slowed down in front of them on a highway — owing to a mosquito fogging machine ahead of it — and collided into it. 

Everyone in the car died, except Mansfield's kids — one of whom grew up to be "Law & Order: SVU" legend Mariska Hargitay. Sensationalism around the accident was high, more so due to disputed claims that Mansfield was decapitated in the crash. But beyond the noise, Mansfield's death significantly helped usher in a major automotive development by requiring heavy vehicles to have rear-end guardrails — commonly referred to as Mansfield bars — to prevent cars from sliding under in case of collisions. 

It's strange to think that "Star Wars" and "Indiana Jones" may never have been conceived if George Lucas hadn't been in a life-altering accident as a young boy. Often cited as the incident that led him toward filmmaking, it took place in 1962, when Lucas was just days away from graduating from Thomas Downey High School in California. At the time, he maintained a keen interest in speed racing and was gearing up for a life in motorsports. That dream was cut short when one day, while driving his Autobianchi, he was broadsided by a speeding vehicle that caused a near-fatal crash. 

"I was actually taken away from the scene, presumed dead, and it wasn't until I reached the hospital that the doctors revived my heartbeat and brought me back to life," Lucas told said in the 1991 Life magazine anthology book "The Meaning of Life: Reflections in Words and Pictures on Why We Are Here" (via The Marginalian). "I have found that most of my conclusions have evolved from observing life since that time." The near-death experience evidently had a profound effect on Lucas, who also famously told Oprah Winfrey in an interview how the crash realigned his larger sense of purpose: "Maybe there's a reason I survived this accident that nobody should have survived." And the rest, as they say, is history. 

In 2022, actor Anne Heche died at the age of 53 following a shocking series of events. The beloved actor, for reasons still undefined, was speeding her Mini Cooper in the neighborhood of Mar Vista in Los Angeles when her car crashed into a residential garage. As TMZ later reported, this was just one of several collisions to have occurred that day. Heche managed to pull away and flee the scene of the accident but soon after, rammed her car into a Jaguar. She took off again, only to crash into a house just moments later. This final crash proved to be deadly and Heche's vehicle, as well as the home she smashed into, went up in flames. 

The actor was rushed to hospital, while emergency responders controlled the damage at the accident site. In the days immediately following the tragedy, it was widely reported that Heche, even with her severe injuries, showed some hope of surviving. That prospect soon turned bleak when the "Another World" star slipped into a coma and was said to have been dealing with serious brain trauma and she was not expected to recover. She was pronounced dead on August 11, six days after her accident, and was kept on life support only to complete the process of organ donation per her wishes.
