Meet The Real-Life Kids Of The Young Sheldon Cast
"The Big Bang Theory" gave us plenty of laughs, many of them thanks to Sheldon Cooper, who was played by Jim Parsons for 12 seasons. Sheldon was, without question the series' breakout character, so it only felt right that when "The Big Bang Theory" got its first spinoff, it followed his origin story. "Young Sheldon," which ran for seven seasons between 2017 and 2024, offered a glimpse into the titular character's family life.
Parsons reprised his character via voiceover, while Iain Armitage played the younger version of Sheldon. The rest of the series' roster was made up of several well-known actors as well as relative newcomers. And wouldn't you know it, a number of the stars of "Young Sheldon" are no strangers to raising their own youngsters. Some of the show's actors were raising little ones while they were working on the show, some became parents long before "The Big Bang Theory" was ever a twinkle in Chuck Lorre's eye, while others became parents after the series wrapped. Keep reading to read about the real-life kids of the "Young Sheldon" cast.
Lance Barber keeps his kids out of the spotlight
Actor Lance Barber starred on "Young Sheldon" as Sheldon's dad, football coach George Cooper Sr. The patriarch of the Cooper family was vastly different from his science-loving son, though in "Young Sheldon" their dynamic was much warmer than the one the grown-up version of Sheldon spoke of in "The Big Bang Theory." In the final season of "Young Sheldon, " George died of a heart attack when Sheldon was 14 years old, a life event that was referenced on "The Big Bang Theory." Although his canonical ending came too soon for fans, George has remained in the "Big Bang" universe by appearing in several episodes of the "Young Sheldon" spinoff, "Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage."
While he's known for being a TV dad, the "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" alum is more private about being a dad in real life. According to Entertainment Weekly, Lance and his wife, professional chef Aliza Barber, have two children. Lance's kids stay out of the public eye (and out of their dad's Instagram posts, for that matter), but apparently they do keep him looped in on TikTok posts involving his "Young Sheldon" character. "So apparently I'm TikTok big, for people who haven't seen the show, and my kids send me these things," Lance shared at 2026 Fan Expo, per CinemaBlend. "And somebody shared yesterday there's this — it's really dark — it insinuates, it doesn't say, that George turns Sheldon into a brisket. If only they thought of it during the show!"
Annie Potts is a mother of three
Legendary actor Annie Potts played Sheldon's hilarious paternal grandma, MeeMaw, on "Young Sheldon." She often stole scenes with her unfiltered banter and bold approach to helping her family. Potts, known for her roles in "Ghostbusters" and the "Toy Story" franchise, stayed on the series until its 2024 finale and earned a Critics Choice nomination for the role in 2023. In real life, Potts is the mom to three sons: Clay Samuel Senchal, James Powell Hayman and Isaac Harris "Harry" Hayman.
Potts' first son, Clay Senechal, was born in 1981 during her second marriage to B. Scott Senechal. Clay is a writer, creator, and executive producer who has worked with DreamWorks and Netflix. In 2021, he wrote a Netflix animated film called "Arlo the Alligator Boy," which Potts voiced. She also happily shared on Facebook in 2022 that Clay made her "MeeMaw 2.0" after he and his wife welcomed their first child.
After her split from Clay's dad in 1989, Potts married her current husband, Emmy-nominated director and producer James Hayman. Their eldest, James Hayman Jr., was born in 1992 and is also an actor. "Young Sheldon" fans may know that James Jr. starred in three episodes alongside his mom. Harry Hayman, Potts' youngest son, was born in 1995. His Instagram is not public, and he seems to be the most private of Potts' kids
Montana Jordan became a dad in 2024
Montana Jordan was 14 years old when he began playing Sheldon's older brother, George "Georgie" Cooper, Jr., on "Young Sheldon." Suffice it to say, Montana pretty much grew up on "Young Sheldon" — and his fictional counterpart grew up, too. In 2025, Montana and his co-star, Emily Osment, who played his girlfriend-turned-wife, Mandy, on "Young Sheldon," landed their own spinoff, "Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage." On "Young Sheldon" and "Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage," Georgie and Mandy have a daughter, Constance, nicknamed "CeeCee." The actor who plays Georgie is also a dad in real life.
In May 2024, Montana Jordan and his then-girlfriend, Jenna Weeks, welcomed their daughter, Emma Rae Jordan. The following year, the couple tied the knot. Since Emma's birth, Montana has shared plenty of "proud dad" moments on his Instagram, including her first birthday in May 2025. "Today is your day babygirl!!" he captioned an Instagram carousel of Emma's milestones. "One year ago today, your beautiful little face entered this world. The best day of my life. You are a blessing to Momma and Dada, Emma Rae. Daddy loves you endlessly!"
Matt Hobby and Mary Grill have three kids
Matt Hobby joined "Young Sheldon" as a supporting player in Season 1, but the show added him to the main cast in Season 3. As the Cooper family's church pastor, Pastor Jeff Difford played a pivotal role in Sheldon's upbringing. Throughout the series, he and Sheldon engaged in hilarious debates about religion. Pastor Jeff also eventually found love with a woman named Robin, who just so happened to have been played by Hobby's actual wife, actor Mary Grill. Yes, Grill is the real-life partner of this "Young Sheldon" actor.
Hobby and Grill married in 2011 and share three children: twin boys and a girl. Both are active on Instagram and often share adorable family moments, though they make a point of keeping their kids' faces obscured in the snapshots. In 2022, Hobby posted a cropped photo of all three of his children together and praised his wife for the reason the siblings get along so well. "The reason that all 3 kids love each other, @megrill" he captioned the Mother's Day Instagram tribute to his wife.
Craig T. Nelson and his ex-wife share three children
Wondering what happened to the cast of "Coach"? Well, the star, Craig T. Nelson, has done quite a bit since the series ended, including take on the role of Dale Ballard, Missy Cooper's (Raegan Revord) recurring Little League baseball coach. Though he wasn't a main character, his stint on the show drew plenty of laughs, especially in his initial awkward scenes with George Sr (Lance Barber). George Sr. and Dale's short-lived feud improved once the latter became MeeMaw's boyfriend and part of the family.
Craig T. Nelson has played a number of memorable dad characters, including Mr. Incredible in "The Incredibles" and patriarch Zeek Braverman in "Parenthood." In real life, "The Family Stone" actor is also a family man with three children: Noah Nelson, Tiffany Nelson, and Christopher Nelson. He shares all three children with his first wife, Robin McCarthy. The "Poltergeist" star also has multiple grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Craig has been married to his second wife, actor Doria Cook, since 1987.
While Tiffany and Christopher seem to stay out of the public eye, Noah has found success in the entertainment industry as a TV writer. In April 2020, Deadline reported that Craig and Noah teamed up to develop a spy thriller series called "The Operative." Noah, who has credits on "Hawaii Five-O" and "Secrets and Lies," wrote the series, while Nelson was set to star as retired intelligence operative John Straw. (As of this writing, there have been no other major updates.) And long before all of that, Noah popped up on four episodes of "Coach" when he was a kid. His other acting credits include the TV show "The Oath," which he also worked on as a writer.
Reba McEntire has one biological child and five stepchildren
There were a handful of big-name recurring guest stars on "Young Sheldon," including the one and only Reba McEntire. On the series, she played June Ballard, a hairstylist who happened to be the ex-wife of Dale Ballard's (Craig T. Nelson). Although McEntire appeared in only a few episodes, it was always exciting to see the country music legend and sitcom mom grace the screen. This should come as little surprise, but the beloved "Reba" star also happens to be a devoted mother and stepmother in real life.
In 1976, the "Rumor Has It" singer married her first husband, Charlie Battles, and became a stepmom to Coty Battles and Lance Battles. After divorcing Battles in 1987, McEntire married her then-manager, Narvel Blackstock. She then became stepmother to his three children: daughters Chassidy and Shawna and son Brandon Blackstock, and the then-reba couple later welcomed a biological child, Shelby Steven McEntire Blackstock. In 2015, McEntire and Narvel divorced.
In a 2010 interview with The Boot, McEntire made it clear that she identifies as a mom, not a stepmom, to all the kids. "I don't consider Brandon, Chassidy and Shawna [husband Narvel Blackstock's children from his first marriage] step-children ... I claim them all," she said. When Brandon died of cancer in August 2025, McEntire briefly described their relationship in a heartfelt Instagram post. "Last week, my stepson/oldest son Brandon Blackstock went home to be with God," the post began. "There is no one else like him, and I'm thankful for the time we had together."
Melissa Peterman was pregnant with her son when she was on Reba
Another "Reba" alum, Melissa Peterman, joined the cast of "Young Sheldon" as Brenda Sparks, the Coopers' next-door neighbor. The "Baby Daddy" actor appeared in multiple episodes during the show's seven-year run, though, ironically, she and Reba McEntire never shared a scene. (Fear not, they would reunite once again on the NBC sitcom "Happy's Place.")
Peterman's role as the fictional Reba's whimsical nemesis/BFF, Barbara Jean, changed her life forever, both professionally and personally. In 2005, while filming the classic series, she became pregnant and gave birth to Riley David Brady, her son with her husband, John Brady. Peterman kept her pregnancy secret during the fifth season of "Reba," as her character wasn't expecting a baby. Throughout the years, the actor has shared many of her son's milestones on social media, though she makes a point of sticking to throwback pics as he prefers to keep a low profile.
When Riley turned 18, for example, Peterman commemorated his birthday on Facebook by posting a picture of him that was snapped right after he was born and wrote, "He doesn't like me to post recent pictures so here's the 1st one we ever took together." And in October 2025, she posted another throwback photo of herself kissing his cheek to celebrate his 20th birthday. "Hard to believe my baby is 20 years old today," she captioned the Instagram post. "Happy Birthday, Riley. You are my sunshine forever and always. I love you more than anything. I am so proud of you. And so proud to be your mom."
Will Sasso became a father for the first time at 50
Canadian actor and comedian Will Sasso joined "Young Sheldon" during the show's sixth season as Mandy McAllister's father, Jim. Although Sasso's character was added to the show when it was already established, he thrived as Mandy's good-natured father who owned the local tire store. When the show ended in 2024, Sasso reprised his role as Jim on "Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage."
The "MadTV" alum's real-life road to parenting came decades into his career. In 2026, when Sasso was 50 years old, he and his wife, Molly Drews, welcomed their first child. Sasso announced the news on Instagram, celebrating Molly's first Mother's Day. "Seeing the woman you love become a mother changes everything," he captioned the Instagram post. "I've always known her to be graceful, fierce, patient, and full of endless love. Now our beautiful new addition to the family gets to experience that every day. Happy Mother's Day to my brilliant wife, Molly." Sasso often documented his wife's pregnancy on Instagram and has shared his little family since their baby was born. Several weeks after his daughter's birth, he posted a snap of his wife and child serving him toasted bologna sandwiches for his 51st birthday.
Rachel Bay Jones and her daughter share a special bond
Actor Rachel Bay Jones began playing Mandy McAllister's overprotective mother and Jim McAllister's wife, Judy McAllister, in Season 6 of "Young Sheldon." And just like Will Sasso, Rachel was offered the chance to reprise her role in "George & Mandy's First Marriage," where fans see more of her disapproval of the titular couple's relationship. In her real life, the Tony-winning actor has also been open about her close relationship with her daughter, Miranda Jones. Rachel gave birth to Miranda on April 27, 2003.
Rachel has never publicly disclosed the identity of her daughter's biological father, though her longtime partner, Benim Foster, raised Miranda as his own. In a 2024 interview with New Beauty, Rachel said that she and her daughter are so close that Miranda helps her with her glam for industry events. "There's nothing sweeter than having your daughter put makeup on your face," Rachel said.
It seems Rachel's daughter has showbiz dreams, too. In Instagram bio, she lists herself as an actor and references The Katz Company, a talent management company. Miranda also frequently appears on her mom's account, as Rachel often posts her daughter's birthdays and their downtime together.
