Liam Neeson's Sons Are All Grown Up And Stunning
The smolder. The gravelly voice. The Irish lilt. The hard-hitting, quick-kicking, action movies. It's no stretch to say the wildly talented and famously tall Liam Neeson is a force to be reckoned with in Hollywood. He has starred in a whole host of hits, from the award-winning "Schindler's List" and the beloved holiday flick "Love Actually" to darker action and thriller movies like "The Dark Knight Rises," "Cold Pursuit," "Widows," and, of course, "Taken." In 2025, showed off his comedy chops in "The Naked Gun," a few years before that, his long-lost movie "Unknown" became one of Netflix's most-popular movies — a full decade after it was originally released.
Arguably the most important role of his life? Father. Liam and his late wife, actor Natasha Richardson, have two sons: Micheál Richardson and Daniel Neeson. The boys — born in 1995 and 1996, respectively – have led pretty incredible lives. Liam Neeson's sons are all grown up, so let's get to know more about them.
Liam Neeson's son Micheál Richardson took his mom's death especially hard
When Liam Neeson's sons were just 13 and 12 years old, respectively, their mother, Natasha Richardson, died. On March 16, 2008, the "Maid in Manhattan" actor was skiing when she fell during her lesson and hit her head. She was taken to the hospital where she died from an epidural hematoma two days after the accident. She was 45.
Understandably, the boys took their mother's death quite hard. But as Micheál Richardson told The Belfast Telegraph in 2015, some of their parents' famous friends, including Bono from the band U2, were incredibly supportive. The brothers' maternal grandmother, Vanessa Redgrave, also stepped in to help care for them.
In the aforementioned interview with The Belfast Telegraph, Micheál did seem to have more trouble coping with his mother's death than his brother. "I was putting [socializing] with my friends as my top priority," he revealed. "Rock bottom was when I chose to miss classes to meet up with them, as well as not realizing that family and work come first." He was eventually sent to a therapy camp where he spent a month in the wilds of Utah.
Both of Liam Neeson's sons are hockey fans
Though Liam Neeson's sons are all grown up now, they still love spending time with their dear old dad. One of their favorite family pastimes, it seems, is taking in sporting events. "They are a big sports family," a source told Closer in 2016. "Liam loves to take the boys to Knicks basketball and Rangers hockey games." Over the years, Micheál Richardson and Daniel Neeson have been spotted at a number of hockey games with Liam Neeson, usually cheering on the New York Rangers.
It sounds like at least one of Liam and Natasha Richardson's sons enjoy playing sports, too. "I was a massive athlete," Daniel told People in 2017. "I loved to play sports like hockey and soccer, tennis and football and all of that. I always wanted to be a producer in the entertainment industry or a hockey player or something like that."
Liam Neeson's older son began using a different last name
As you might've noticed, Daniel Neeson uses their father's surname, whereas his brother, Micheál Richardson, uses their late mother's last name. As their maternal grandmother, Vanessa Redgrave, told the Daily Mail in 2018, Micheál decided to make the change official to honor Natasha Richardson's memory. "That wasn't because he wanted to avoid his father's fame, which is enormous," Redgrave said. "He wanted to hold his mother close to him." Redgrave was also very supportive of her grandson's choice to take his mother's name, stating, "Our quaint customs dictate we have to have a male name." She went on to express that she saw no issue with him eschewing said customs.
Liam Neeson fully supported Micheál's decision to use Natasha's last name. "I think he did the right thing," the "Taken" actor said on "Radio Andy" in 2020. "I'd hate for him to be constantly asked, 'Oh are you Liam Neeson's son?' ... So, it was a lovely gesture. Natasha's family, mother, and sisters were very touched by it, as indeed I was too."
Micheál Richardson landed an internship on Saville Row
According to an interview with the Evening Standard, the time Liam Neeson's son Micheál Richardson spent at a wilderness therapy camp in Utah didn't just help him turn his life around — it also gave him some new direction. Upon leaving the camp, the then-teen decided to move to London, where he landed an internship with a tailor on Savile Row. "I learned about what dedication means and the many months spent making just one bespoke suit," he said. The internship apparently also gave him inspiration, as he followed it up by opening his own fashion gallery, Maison Mais Non, in 2015.
But why did he pursue that internship in the first place? "Fashion was something I never went after before, but it's so important, as it shows who you are," Micheál revealed to the Evening Standard. "Back in New York, I didn't have a good reputation for fashion ... I'd be called a hipster for just wearing a couple of chains." His late mother, Natasha Richardson, was the one who changed his tune. "One thing my Mum taught me was to dress how you feel, dress how you want."
Daniel Neeson studied theater in college
Daniel Neeson, who is the son of actors Liam Neeson and Natasha Richardson, studied theater in college, so it would be reasonable to assume that he would eventually get into the family business. However, that is not at all what happened. After graduating from Tulane University in 2019, Daniel did not dive into a full-blown acting career.
Daniel told the New York Post in 2019 that, despite his theater degree, he's not actually interested in working as an actor. Rather, he's more into launching his own businesses (more on that shortly). "I think it's great that I caught the bug when I was young to do something different [than acting]," he said. Daniel also noted that he believes his late mother would be proud of him for following his interests. "She was always about 'don't ever feel like you have to be forced down a tunnel to fit in,'" he said. "Do what you want to do, but do it to your best and be generous with it.'"
While still in college, Daniel Neeson started his own business
Liam Neeson's son Daniel Neeson has almost always been passionate about protecting the planet. In a 2019 interview with the New York Post, Daniel recalled learning about global warming in grade school and the lesson sending him into a "panic attack." "It really struck me," he went on. "I've always been in tune with the environmental crisis [since then]." This passion inspired him to start his own environmentally-friendly clothing line in 2017 — while he was still in school at Tulane University.
The line, Pine Outfitters, plants one tree for every product sold. As he told WWD in 2017, "I'm excited to not only promote our clothing, but to promote our mission, which is to help embrace the wild side and help promote environmental awareness." Alas, Pine Outfitters eventually ran its course. As of 2022, the company is no longer active.
Liam Neeson wanted Micheál Richardson to do anything but act
While some parents encourage their kids to follow in their career footsteps, Liam Neeson hoped his son Micheál Richardson would seek out anything but acting. "Dad was like 'please become a carpenter or something,'" Richardson told The Standard back in June 2015.
For a while, Richardson took his dad's advice. He didn't become a carpenter, but, as previously mentioned, he did work in fashion for a few years. However, he couldn't stay away from the family business forever. As he said in The Standard, "[My inner actor is] in there somewhere, it's lingering in the shadows."
This "inner actor" came out of the shadows and into the light in July 2015 when it was announced that he would be playing the Irish rebel Michael Collins in the movie "The Rising: 1916." Funny enough, Liam played the revolutionary in 1996's "Michael Collins." As of this writing, "The Rising: 1916" appears to still be in development.
Micheál Richardson continues to build his filmography
Though he might've wanted Michéal Richardson to get into any other line of business, Liam Neeson sure seems to be on board with his acting career. Neeson even recommended Richardson for the role of his character's son in the 2019 film "Cold Pursuit," but the Oscar-winning star didn't push the issue. "I had suggested him early on to Hans, our director, and Michael, our producer. And then I just stayed away." Neeson said in a statement to IANS (via Business Standard). "Michéal read for the part and he got it. I was pleased, pleased for him too."
Richardson's other film credits include "Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues," "Vox Lux," "On Our Way," and "Somewhere Quiet." He's also appeared on TV shows like "Big Dogs" and "FBI," and even lent his voice to the animated series "Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi." In the latter show, he voiced the younger version of Qui-Gon Jinn, who of course, was originally played by his dad in "Star Wars: Episode I — The Phantom Menace." What's more, he's racked up some stage credits, including an off-Broadway production of "Nothing Gold Can Stay."
Liam Neeson and Micheál Richardson have worked together multiple times
Luckily for Liam Neeson and Micheál Richardson fans, the father-son duo have starred in two movies together (as of this writing): "Cold Pursuit" and "Made in Italy." In "Cold Pursuit," an off-kilter thriller about a father who goes on a revenge binge after his son is killed, Neeson plays the dad, and Richardson plays the son.
"We didn't have to pretend to have a relationship. Micheál is my son ... so I think that comes across," Neeson told IANS (via Business Standard) about the movie. "It was a no-brainer with regard to acting with him. It was just having a regular conversation with your boy." "Made in Italy" also features Neeson and Richardson playing father and son. While promoting the flick on "Radio Andy," Neeson gushed to host Andy Cohen about how much he loved acting opposite his own kid. "I'm very proud of him, Andy. I'm not going to blow smoke up his a***, but he does have a presence," he said.
Liam Neeson's son Daniel Neeson tried his hand at DJing
Though Liam Neeson's son Daniel Neeson didn't get into acting, that's not to say he isn't an entertainer. Back in 2017, Neeson and two of his friends started a DJing music group called Recess Club that focused on house music.
After they Recess Club formed, they didn't waste much time before diving into performing. The same year they got started, they posted a pic of a gig on Instagram and wrote, "showing Tulane University what just a part of Recess Club is made of"; in another post, they shared a snapshot of a "packed house at The University of Scranton."
Though Recess Club did have a number of gigs in New York City, like one at the Rumpus Room, it does appear that they've since packed up their turntables and headphones. Their Instagram account hasn't been updated since January of 2018, and their SoundCloud page hasn't been updated in years.
Daniel Neeson met his longtime love in college
Liam Neeson's younger son, Daniel Neeson, first connected with his longtime significant other, Natalie Ackerman, when they were both sophomores at Tulane University in Louisiana. Their meet-cute was truly cute: They exchanged phone numbers and found that they were just one digit apart. Adorable. "I'm the luckiest guy ever," Neeson told the New York Post in 2019.
Daniel's older brother, Micheál Richardson, has more or less kept his personal life out of the spotlight. There isn't much information about his dating history, but he did tell The Jakarta Post in 2020 that his love life was more or less on ice during the pandemic. "It's hard out there for us single people during the time of Corona," he said. "I've not been around so many people, so the dating scene has been sparse." Richardson then went on to note that some of his friends still managed to strike up relationships, despite the pandemic's constraints. "So it's inspiring me a bit, but at the end of the day, I just have to stay diligent, no matter how lonely one can get," he stated.
Micheál Richardson tries to stay connected to his mother however he can
When Micheál Richardson and his dad teamed up for 2020's "Made in Italy," they found themselves acting out a storyline that wasn't all that foreign. In the flick, the duo play a father and son (albeit estranged) who have to come together after the death of their wife and mother, respectively. The movie's tragic plot is something Liam Neeson and Micheál could connect with on a very real level.
As Micheál told People, while the shoot proved to be an emotional one, the overall experience actually helped him heal. "When you lose somebody so close to you, sometimes you just push it away and out of your head because the thought of them hurts," the budding young actor told the outlet. "I found that's an unhealthy thing to do — you have to remember them."
For Micheál that means watching Natasha Richardson's movies — especially the Lindsay Lohan version of "The Parent Trap" — but also keeping her memory alive in his day-to-day life. "You just latch on to the tiny little memories, whether it's her laugh or her energy in the room or her cooking," he told The Times in 2021. What's more, his pursuit of acting has also been keeping his bond with his late mother strong. "Now that I'm on this journey that she had gone through herself, I feel like she's with me," he said in People. "I feel closer."
Daniel Neeson celebrates his mother's memory
Micheál Richardson and Daniel Neeson continue to grapple with the loss of their mother, Natasha Richardson. As Micheál told People in 2025, "I don't, even still, think that I've fully comprehended it, and that seems to be a similar journey to a lot of people I've spoken to."
In March 2024, Micheál's younger brother, Daniel, marked the 15th anniversary of their mom's death with a lengthy Instagram tribute. "I look forward to reuniting one day but for now I take solace in knowing you're beside me every step of the way," Daniel wrote. "Hopefully, I'm making you proud." He also shared words of inspiration from his aunt, Joely Richardson, which have helped him work through the loss: "We sometimes forget that we're on an ever spinning planet. Change is inevitable, and we must embrace it with open arms."
Two months later, Daniel posted a photo he took with his maternal grandmother, Vanessa Redgrave, and shared that they were honoring a very special occasion along with Joely. "A weekend of magic cellying my mum's birthday and feeling the power of all moms this weekend," he wrote on Instagram.
Daniel Neeson's engagement was marked by memories of Natasha Richardson
Daniel Neeson hit another major milestone in September 2025 when he became engaged to longtime girlfriend Natalie Ackerman. The pair took a sailboat out onto the Hudson River and, with the iconic New York City skyline behind them, Daniel decided it was the perfect place to pop the question. Following the happy occasion, the 29-year-old entrepreneur told People, "I could write novels on why I love Natalie, but there's something deeper, something so cosmic about our relationship that I know we're meant to be in this universe together." And, once again, thoughts of his late mother, Natasha Richardson, were not far off. "I see my mother in Nat, I see life in Nat, and reality just got a whole lot sweeter with a ring on it," Daniel enthused.
The lovebirds capped off their special day by heading to an engagement bash where they enjoyed bar food, custom cocktails, and an outpouring of love from family and friends, including their dad Liam Neeson and Bravo personality Andy Cohen.
Daniel Neeson is an entrepreneur with a unique liquor business
Starting one business wasn't enough for Daniel Neeson and his good friend Adam Millman. The pair met during their freshman year at Tulane University, hit it off and, in 2017, launched the aforementioned fashion label Pine Outfitters. Just four years later, in 2021, they found themselves entering yet another joint business venture, this time in the spirits industry.
Teaming up with Vivanco Distillery in Arandas, Mexico, the longtime friends decided to craft their own liquor and De Nada Tequila was born. Speaking with Adam Mendler for his blog about the inspiration behind the brand, Millman shared how he and Daniel had seen Millennials and Gen Zers enjoying tequila but having to settle for options packed with unnecessary ingredients, like sugar, and artificial colors. As Daniel elaborated, "We felt there wasn't a tequila in the trade that offered authenticity, quality, sustainability, and price accessibility." They decided to fill that gap and, just like with their inaugural business, sustainability was also key. De Nada Tequila has zero additives, starts at $39, and is packed in highly recyclable aluminum bottles.
What's more, Daniel told the Irish Star that his parents, Liam Neeson and Natasha Richardson, served as an inspiration for the brand, the way they do with most things in his life. "I come from a family that, hospitality is at the forefront of importance," he explained. "My father and my mother were always about treating your guests, your family, your friends with the utmost respectful experience."
