Friends Or Strangers? Where The Big Bang Theory Cast Stands Today

It certainly wasn't the intention of the highly lucrative, long-running Chuck Lorre show, but an apt episode title for the situation that "The Big Bang Theory" cast found themselves in was "The Friendship Experiment." Imagine Lorre has been recast as an ambitious (and patient) scientist who set out to discover if a group of strangers would actually become besties forever after pretending to be friends for a decade. According to Kaley Cuoco, the result of the study is that most of the bonds you see on TV don't translate into real life — keyword being most.

But first, let's get to the worst of the bad news about where "The Big Bang" gang stands today. While some members of the "Friends" cast remained friendly enough to have a group text long after their show ended, Cuoco said this wasn't the case for her and her ex-castmates. According to Metro, she had painted a sunnier picture of everyone's post-finale relationship in 2021 when she said, "The texts are always happening." Mayim Bialik confirmed this was the case that same year, telling Us Weekly, "We've had a couple of touch bases."

"The Big Bang Theory" ended in 2019, and it seems many members of the main cast — which also included Johnny Galecki, Jim Parsons, Kunal Nuyyar, Simon Helberg, and Melissa Rauch — have slowly drifted apart since then. But other bonds have endured, and the friendships of some of the series' supporting cast served them well when they embarked on an exciting new adventure in the "Big Bang" universe. 

When Kaley Cuoco revealed that "The Big Bang Theory" cast's group bond was as kaput as Penny's acting career, she also shared a happier update: Her text thread with on-screen hubby Johnny Galecki remained active. "There's one with me and Johnny. All the time," she said on "Watch What Happens Live." Many fans were probably pleased to hear that the pair were still pals, especially those who are well-versed in behind-the-scenes "Big Bang Theory" lore. They know that Cuoco and Galecki's friendship had to survive something that often results in a rift that never heals: a failed romance.

The co-stars began dating in 2008, a year after the show's premiere, and by 2010, the "Big Bang Theory" costars had ended their real-life romance. But beyond keeping things civil for the sake of their jobs, they built an enduring friendship. The exes also gave a play-by-play of their relationship in the 2022 book, "The Big Bang Theory: The Definitive, Inside Story of the Epic Hit Series." Reflecting on how everything turned out, Galecki said, "I think I might value my relationship with her more than any other previous relationship or relationship afterwards."

Fans got to see Galecki and Cuoco together again in April 2025 when they appeared in a mobile game ad. Later that year, Cuoco revealed that they and their families had also hung out. At the time, Galecki was a father of two, and Cuoco's daughter Matilda was 2. "Just a few months ago our kids all finally met and it was magic!" she told Parade in December 2025. "Thinking we have been friends for 20 years now is mind blowing."

While Mayim Bialik's character, Amy Farrah Fowler, successfully infiltrated "The Big Bang Theory" friend group and remained a part of it until the series' end, just one of Bialik's off-screen friendships with the main cast withstood the test of time. "I'm very close with Melissa Rauch," Bialik told People in August 2026. She also revealed that they spent some time together when they filmed cameos for the spinoff series "Stuart Fails to Save the Universe," saying, "That was really, really special."

Bialik previously appeared as a parody of herself on Rauch's "Night Court" revival in January 2025. The cameo was inspired by Rauch's obsession with Bialik's "Blossom" character, something she was nervous about confessing to Bialik after she joined the "TBBT" cast. Luckily, Bialik wasn't weirded out by the revelation, and she told People she was thrilled when Rauch asked her to appear on "Night Court" years later.

Bialik's friendship with Rauch isn't the only one that she has maintained with a "Big Bang Theory" co-star. She also reunited with two of the show's supporting cast, Kevin Sussman and John Ross Bowie, on "SFTSTU." Afterward, she revealed on "The Official Stuart Fails to Save the Universe Podcast" that she remained close friends with both men and had even had a years-long "Dungeons & Dragons" campaign with Sussman. She also said they told her about the spinoff before it was public knowledge. "I like being able to reach out to John and to Kevin and to be able to say, 'I do not have any memory in my career of being this excited for another actor,'" she told People.

In her 2026 interview with People, Mayim Bialik didn't list Jim Parsons as one of "The Big Bang Theory" stars she was closest with, despite previously saying that she and her on-screen love interest remained pals after the show ended. "Jim Parsons and I check in with each other in life. ... I've been to life events and know his family," she told Wired in 2020. When she and Parsons appeared on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" in 2021, she also revealed that Parsons had personally asked her to star in the show he was producing, "Call Me Kat." They were still shooting "TBBT" at the time. "I was shocked because I think I'm very annoying," Bialik said. That working relationship lasted until "Call Me Kat" was canceled in 2023.

It's unclear if there was a falling out between the former castmates, as Bialik hasn't mentioned Parsons when talking about her lasting "TBBT" friendships, but what is clear is that Bialik and Parsons aren't on the same page when it comes to giving fans more Shamy. "The Big Bang Theory" got canceled because Parsons decided he no longer wanted to play Dr. Sheldon Cooper, and he later said he has no desire to resurrect the character in a reboot. In response, Bialik told Yahoo! Entertainment, "With all due respect to Jim, I think that there's a lot of interest and love for these characters and I'd be super happy to get to revisit [it] in any way."

The topic of Mayim Bialik's relationship with Kaley Cuoco came up in a 2020 interview with Wired. "I went to her wedding and celebrated things with her. I would say we're friends," Bialik said. Her answer seemed to dispel rumors that she and Cuoco had feuded while filming "The Big Bang Theory." In 2018, a source told Naughty Gossip that they were fighting on the show's set, prompting the production team to step in and try to put a stop to it.

But Bialik's insistence that she and Cuoco were buds (as of August 2020, anyway) didn't stop fans from raising questions about their level of closeness. A few months later, Redditors noticed that Bialik was following Cuoco on Instagram, but the reverse wasn't the case. What made the situation even more eyebrow-raising was that Bialik was the only main cast member Cuoco wasn't following. "I think Kaley and Mayim didn't share a good off-screen [relationship] to begin with," one Reddit user mused. However, others were convinced something had happened that caused Cuoco to unfollow Bialik. 

Whatever the case, Bialik didn't utter a peep about her former on-screen bestie in 2026 when People asked her which co-stars she was still tight with. And for the record, Bialik told Yahoo! Entertainment that there was never a "TBBT" group text, so at least she and her castmates didn't have to watch one slowly become less and less active.

When Chuck Lorre decided to transform Kevin Sussman's unassuming comic book store owner, Stuart Bloom, into the unexpected hero of an action-packed "Big Bang Theory" spinoff, it was inevitable that Sussman would be asked about where he stood with all his former co-stars. "I hadn't seen Kaley since 'Big Bang' ended," he told the New York Post in August 2026. However, after she made her "Stuart Fails to Save the Universe" cameo, he said, "We just fell right back into the same friendship that we had on set."

Both Sussman and John Ross Bowie also left comments congratulating Cuoco when she announced that she was expecting her second child in June 2026. On "TBBT," Bowie played one of Sheldon Cooper's many nemeses, Barry Kripke. But when Bowie joined the "SFTSTU" cast, Kripke became Stuart's headache. This wasn't the case off-screen, as Sussman and Bowie go way back. "Kevin and I kind of knew each other back in the commercial auditioning days. ... 'Approachable nerd,' I guess, was the category," Bowie said on "The Official Stuart Fails to Save the Universe Podcast."

Bowie and Sussman even became writing partners whose projects included a 2012 script for a sitcom that, sadly, never made it to TV. Bowie told "Entertainment Tonight" that he also knew their co-stars Lauren Lapkus and Brian Posehn before they all appeared on "TBBT" together. "It really is [a blessing] to get to work with people I love who are kind and funny and punctual," he said. And on the podcast, he revealed, "We have a really vibrant and robust text chain, which is really nice."

Lauren Lapkus and Brian Posehn's small parts on "The Big Bang Theory" paid big dividends when they became half of the core four on "Stuart Fails to Save the Universe." But long before Lapkus' comedic career took off, she babysat to pay the bills while trying to catch her big break in NYC. "I didn't want to have a full-time job because I was trying to audition for things all the time," she explained to Vulture. One person who offered her a babysitting gig was Posehn. "She was my son's second nanny," he told "Entertainment Tonight," adding that the first nanny had been one of Lapkus' friends. Lapkus also mentioned the job to "Entertainment Tonight," and she said of the "SFTSTU" cast, "We're all friends outside of this, so it's been great working together."

It was evident in their early interviews promoting the show that the cast was stoked about getting to act alongside people whose company they enjoyed, so it's not surprising that filming brought them closer together. "We're even better friends," Posehn said in his "ET" interview. He also mentioned their group text, where they weren't keeping their discussions restricted to work-related talk. "We talk about our kids a little bit ... and then it's just dumb bit central as well," John Ross Bowie revealed on "The Official Stuart Fails to Save the Universe Podcast."

Wil Wheaton is another familiar face from "The Big Bang Theory" who popped up on "Stuart Fails to Save the Universe" during its first season, and he also co-hosts "The Official Stuart Fails to Save the Universe Podcast" with Felicia Day. When John Ross Bowie appeared on the pod in July 2026, Wheaton told listeners, "John and I are extraordinarily close friends in real life." They even revealed that they had recently watched the 1984 Emilio Estevez classic "Repo Man" at a theater, where the punk band Circle Jerks also performed. "We're middle-aged weirdo buddies," Wheaton explained to Day.

During the interview, they discussed how Kevin Sussman was actually offered the role of Barry Kripke first but couldn't accept due to other obligations. Wheaton also said that he and Sussman share a love of board games. "I like a good board game, but Kevin plays those board games where you really need a pretty keen understanding of international law," Bowie quipped. After watching the best buds have a great time during the interview, Day told Wheaton, "I'm like, 'Aw, I want a friend like that.'"

In another episode of "The Official Stuart Fails to Save the Universe Podcast," Wheaton told Day that he was beyond elated when he got invited to appear on "Stuart Fails to Save the Universe," and he couldn't wait to start filming. The experience was everything he hoped it would be, with the "Star Trek: The Next Generation" actor revealing that the vibe on set was warm, supportive, and upbeat. "It was really such a gift and such a blessing to be welcomed into that ensemble just for the couple of days that I was there," he said.

When Redditors began investigating which "Big Bang Theory" stars were snubbing some of their former castmates on social media, they discovered that Jim Parsons doesn't follow Johnny Galecki on Instagram. As of this writing, the two haven't revealed whether there's some bad blood there, but Galecki did express some unhappiness over the way Parsons quit "TBBT," sealing the show's fate. His issue was that Parsons didn't speak to his co-stars about his plans before Chuck Lorre announced that the show would be ending during a cast meeting. "It could have been handled better," Galecki said in "The Big Bang Theory: The Definitive, Inside Story of the Epic Hit Series." Seeing the reaction of one stunned co-star in particular was especially tough. "It was tearing me to shreds watching Kaley break down," he recalled.

There also might have been drama between Kaley Cuoco and Parsons. In the book, showrunner Steve Molaro said Cuoco was so hurt by Parsons' unexpected exit announcement that she didn't want to film with him the following day. By 2024, it seemed Cuoco had moved past any hard feelings when she was photographed giving Parsons a warm hug backstage at his Broadway show "Our Town." However, when recounting their reunion on "Today," she did reveal, "I haven't seen him in years."

In a 2026 interview with Independent, Cuoco also admitted that things weren't always rosy behind the scenes on "The Big Bang Theory" set. "I was constantly trying to keep this group together desperately. ... It was an explosion of money and fame and became something so much bigger than any of us could have imagined," she said. "So of course there was a little bit of drama."

When she spoke to Us Weekly in April 2021, Mayim Bialik revealed that Kunal Nayyar was the castmate who felt the most nostalgic for the days when "The Big Bang Theory" cast was more connected. "Often he's the one to sort of express that kind of missing-ness," she said. Nayyar has found ways to spend time with some of his former co-stars at work, making cameos on "Stuart Fails to Save the Universe" and "Night Court." When he reunited with Melissa Rauch for the latter in 2024, he spoke to ET about his bond with his "TBBT" castmates. "We've never stopped loving each other," he said, adding, "It's even deeper than family, to be honest. ... We're all in each other's lives."

The following June, Nayyar told the New York Post, "I'm in touch with everyone. We are all still very close." Based on some of the other cast comments here, the latter claim seems a little dubious, but when he appeared on "The Official Big Bang Theory Podcast" that same month, Nayyar insisted that his bond with Rauch was very much intact. "Melissa and I are very, very close, obviously, and have stayed close even after the show," he said. He'd previously told ET that he had begged Rauch for a "Night Court" cameo, so he clearly loves working with her. However, it's Kaley Cuoco he would reach out to if he needed any kind of guidance. "She's become this powerhouse of a human who's experienced a lot in life," he explained on the podcast.

Because it got canceled, the "Night Court" revival ended with quite the cliffhanger in 2025: Simon Helberg made a cameo as Melissa Rauch's on-screen husband, whose existence viewers had previously been unaware of. When promoting the episode, Helberg hinted to "Entertainment Tonight" that he doesn't keep in touch with his "The Big Bang Theory" co-stars. Recalling his reaction to seeing that Rauch was calling him about the cameo, he said, "No one talks anymore. So I got nervous for a second. ... You're like, 'Well, who died?'" 

However, the duo enjoyed playing spouses again, with Rauch sweetly saying, "It feels like home." Old habits do die hard, however, and Helberg noted that Rauch's real-life voice disappeared momentarily when she began speaking in the higher-pitched squeak of her "TBBT" character, Dr. Bernadette Rostenkowski-Wolowitz.

While Rauch and Helberg obviously don't talk every day based on his reaction to her phone call, there have been other signs that they have maintained a friendly relationship. A few months after his "Night Court" appearance, Rauch welcomed Helberg to Instagram, writing, "This deeply hilarious, wildly talented and all around incredible human holds such a special place in my heart." And when Rauch shared some throwback photos from "TBBT" set on Instagram in January 2026, Helberg wrote in the comments, "Ah yes — the season you brought your Gosling security pillow to set everyday." (FYI, there really was a picture of Rauch hugging a pillow with Ryan Gosling's likeness on it.) Fans might not see as many interactions like this as they'd like these days, but it's nice to know that some cast members' real-life relationships didn't end with a big bang when the show did.
