A Timeline Of Taylor Swift's Biggest Friendship Fallouts Over The Years
Taylor Swift has grown up in the public eye, so we've seen quite a few of her friendships blossom over the years. During Selena Gomez's appearance on KISS FM UK in 2017, she revealed how she and Swift first came across each other. "We actually dated the Jonas Brothers," she said. From navigating exes to being in each other's weddings, they have come a long way. That said, the other side of the coin is true as well. We've seen some of Swift's friendships fall apart too, with some ending dramatically and others simply fading away. Taylor Swift and Demi Lovato's friendship has been quite bumpy, which falls in line with a few of Swift's other bestie fallouts.
As for Lovato and Swift, the drama started back in February 2016, when Lovato appeared to take issue when Swift made a donation of $250,000 to help Kesha with her legal troubles. "Take something to Capitol Hill or actually speak out about something and then I'll be impressed," Lovato wrote on X (via ENews). However, the pair reconciled a few years later. "Life's too short for women to not support other women ... especially when women release great music. Great job @taylorswift," Lovato captioned an Instagram Story in 2019 (via Glamour). This gesture was reciprocated by Swift, who shared Lovato's story and wrote, "This is so awesome [and] put the biggest smile on my face." While Swift and Lovato's relationship seemed to be heading in a good direction in September 2019, the same cannot be said for all of Swift's former friends. We've barely scratched the surface here. So, without further ado, let's get into Taylor Swift's friendship fallouts.
Katy Perry and Taylor Swift had a 'Bad Blood' phase
The truth about Taylor Swift and Katy Perry's iconic feud is sad, but they started off on good terms. Back in October 2009, Swift complimented Perry's birthday celebration on X. "@katyperry knows how to throw a birthday party," she wrote. In April 2010, during the Fearless era, the duo even shared a stage while singing "Hot n Cold." A few years later, things between them seemed to take an unfriendly turn. While talking about the song "Bad Blood" with Rolling Stone in September 2014, Swift hinted that the song is about a fellow female artist. "She basically tried to sabotage an entire arena tour. She tried to hire a bunch of people out from under me," Swift explained. Even though Swift didn't name the person, it was speculated that she could have been talking about Perry after the singer left a pointed tweet on X the next day. Perry wrote, "Watch out for the Regina George in sheep's clothing."
During Perry's May 2017 appearance on "The Late Late Show Carpool Karaoke Primetime Special," she spoke about her troubles with Swift. According to Perry, three backup artists scheduled to work for Perry joined Swift's tour while Perry was taking a break from touring. When Perry was ready to work again, the dancers wanted to work for her. In May 2018, Perry extended an "actual olive branch" with a letter, and Swift was grateful for the gesture, per Swift's Instagram story (via E! News). Nothing says patching up like baking another person some cookies, and Swift did exactly that for Perry. That said, Perry didn't attend Swift's July 2026 wedding to Travis Kelce at Madison Square Garden due to a performance, but some fans think the former may not have been invited.
Kanye Ye West and Taylor Swift went from enemies to friends to enemies
Kanye "Ye" West and Taylor Swift didn't start off as friends. Far from it, actually. Tensions began in September 2009, when Swift was taking the best female video award for her song "You Belong With Me" at the MTV Video Music Awards. Out of nowhere, West hopped in and said, "Imma let you finish, but Beyoncé had one of the best videos of all time!" Swift, naturally, wasn't thrilled about this. She told People (via TIME), "I was really excited because I'd just won the award, and then I was really excited because Kanye West was onstage, and then I wasn't excited anymore after that." However, in February 2015, West and Swift seemed to have reconciled. "It started with both of us really liking Jay and wanting him to be happy. And then Kanye and I both reached a place where he would say really nice things about my music and what I've accomplished, and I could ask him how his kid's doing," Swift said in an August 2015 interview with Vanity Fair.
That said, in February 2016, West released the song "Famous," and the lyrics, "I feel like me and Taylor might still have s** / I made that b***h famous" ruffled a lot of feathers. That same month, West claimed that he had run the lyrics past Swift, and she was okay with it. Meanwhile, Swift's team said she was kept in the dark about "I made that b***h famous" being used. Things got trickier when West's then-wife Kim Kardashian shared parts of the West-Swift conversation on Snapchat and took his side. What followed was a he-said, she-said debate about what was agreed upon between them.
Taylor Swift and Justin Bieber's friendship didn't age well
Taylor Swift doesn't count Justin Bieber as a friend, though they were pretty close at one point. At least, that's what Taylor's mom Andrea Swift said back in August 2011. Bieber performed "One Time" at Swift's Fearless World Tour in November 2009 and got injured. "[Taylor] told me to break a leg ... I couldn't break a leg, but I broke my foot for you," he joked in a YouTube video that same month. In August 2011, they also sang Bieber's iconic song, "Baby," at the Staples Center and were then seen jamming together during the Teen Choice Awards when Bieber's then-girlfriend, Selena Gomez, sang "Love You Like a Love Song."
However, things between Bieber and Taylor didn't seem friendly in May 2013. Taylor looked disgusted when Gomez greeted Bieber at the Billboard Music Awards with a kiss. Things seemed even more complicated in June 2019 when Taylor liked a Tumblr post (via Elle) that claimed Bieber "cheated on her best friend." That same month, Taylor publicly spoke against Scooter Braun after he bought the masters to six of her albums. So, how is this connected to Bieber? In August 2016, Bieber posted a picture of himself on a video call with Braun and Kanye West on Instagram with the caption, "Taylor swift what up." This didn't sit right with Taylor, who called this out on Tumblr three years later in June 2019. She claimed, "Scooter got his two clients together to bully me online about it." Bieber responded to Taylor's Tumblr post on Instagram. He defended Braun and explained, "I usually don't rebuttal things like this but when you try and deface someone I loves character thats crossing a line."
Taylor Swift and Lorde's friendship seems to have fizzled out
Taylor Swift and Lorde's relationship might not have started on the best note, as Lorde made some comments about Swift that she later took back later. During her interview with Metro magazine back in September 2013, Lorde said, "Taylor Swift is so flawless, and so unattainable, and I don't think it's breeding anything good in young girls." Swift took it in stride, though. Lorde told Rolling Stone (via E! News), "[Taylor] was like, 'It's fine. If all you've done is call someone perfect, it's not that bad.'" By November 2016, the singers seemed to be super close. Swift even went so far as to plan a celebration and make Lorde a card when she turned 20 years old.
In June 2017, Lorde compared being friends with Swift to "having a friend with an autoimmune disease" due to Swift's popularity. "There are certain places you can't go together. Certain things you can't do," she told The Guardian. In a matter of days, she pushed back on the idea of being in Swift's infamous squad, but later clarified that she meant no harm by it. So, are Taylor Swift and Lorde still friends? We don't know. But what we do know is that their friendship was questioned. However, Lorde explained on X (via Entertainment Weekly), "Taylor is a dear friend. I love her very much." Lorde and Swift's friendship stopped popping up in headlines after that. Lorde allegedly wasn't even seen when Swift tied the knot in July 2026. If she wasn't invited, it could be a big deal because when Swift spoke about her marriage preparations on "The Graham Norton Show" in October 2025, she explained that she planned to invite "anyone [she's] ever talked to."
Taylor Swift is said to have distanced herself from Blake Lively
Taylor Swift and Blake Lively's friendship started with Lively making the first move. Back in September 2015, Lively referenced Swift in an Instagram photo for a L'Oréal advertisement, which she captioned (via E! News), "Turns out this WASN'T a video shoot for John Legend's cover of 'Bad Blood.'" At one point, Lively even admitted to being a Swiftie. In December 2015, she then captioned a picture of herself alongside Swift and a kangaroo on Instagram: "Selfie game was strong ... until I got photobombed by some crazy fan." Their friendship didn't appear surface-level either. Swift was the godmother of Lively and Ryan Reynolds' three children after all. When Swift won a Grammy award for Album Of The Year in March 2021, she made a beautiful gesture toward the Reynolds-Lively family in her speech: "I want to thank James, Ines, and Betty [Reynolds], and their parents, who are the second and third people that I play every new song that I write."
The friendship supposedly took a hit after Taylor Swift got pulled into Lively and Justin Baldoni's explosive legal battle. Swift received a subpoena from Baldoni's legal team in May 2025. But that's not all. Lively reportedly referred to herself as Khaleesi and implied Swift was one of her dragons in a text to Baldoni, saying (via CNN), "My dragons ... protect those I fight for. So really we all benefit from those gorgeous monsters of mine." An insider told Page Six, "[Swift] was deeply wounded and, even if that heals, the scar will remain." While we don't know if the once-close friends had a fallout or not, Lively was missing from Swift's July 2026 wedding celebration. Swift is allegedly no longer a godmother to Lively's children.
Karlie Kloss and Taylor Swift's bond toned down quite a bit
"I love Karlie Kloss! I want to bake cookies with her," Taylor Swift told Vogue back in January 2012. Not long after, Kloss tagged Swift on X (via Business Insider) and wrote, "Your kitchen or mine?" So, when did they actually cross paths? That happened more than a year later. While they didn't bake cookies, they did start cooking up a friendship at the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show in November 2013. Swift sang, and Kloss was booked for the show. In March 2014, Swift and Kloss took a road trip together, and by September of that year, there was a Karlie Kloss room in Swift's home. During her Rolling Stone interview, she gave a tour of one of her guest bedrooms. "This is where Karlie usually stays," Swift said.
So, what changed? Swift allegedly wasn't happy when Kloss invited some of her friends to Swift's place without her permission. Swift didn't attend either of Kloss and Joshua Kushner's two weddings, which included a Jewish ceremony in 2018 and a vow renewal in 2019. While Kloss' team tried to squash talks of bad blood between the two, celebrity insider Perez Hilton had something else to say. In July 2019, he alleged that Swift and Kloss' friendship was in trouble. "A source tells me that Taylor found out that Karlie was telling things about her and her career to Scooter [Braun]," Hilton claimed in a YouTube video. Even though Kloss and Swift don't give us BFF goals like before, they seem to be on good enough terms given that Kloss was at Swift's July 2026 wedding. Speaking about Swift's wedding, Kloss told Today, "They're an amazing couple and I'm so happy for them."
Taylor Swift and Martha Hunt's friendship appears to have run its course
Imagine being booked to perform at the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show while your future friend is set to walk the runway. That's what happened to Taylor Swift and Martha Hunt in 2014. By December 2014, Hunt shared a picture via Instagram of her girlfriends, which included Swift. "Bae af," the caption read. From spending time together to starring in Swift's 2015 "Bad Blood" video, Swift and Hunt seemed to really hit it off. She was even a part of Swift's squad, which was a big deal back in the day. Months later, in July 2015, Hunt spoke highly of the singer. "[Taylor's] always there for me and she always has good advice," Hunt told told E! News. "She's been in the spotlight for a very long time so she obviously has so much advice to give me."
A couple of years after, in December 2019, Hunt took to Instagram to share an adorable picture of the two of them hugging as a birthday tribute. "T – You've kept an open heart when it wasn't easy. You've stayed true to you and I couldn't be prouder seeing you find your voice and standing firmly behind it. Happy fking birthday!" she wrote. Fast forward to Swift's July 2026 nuptials: Hunt was not there. One could say that Hunt probably had prior commitments or something important got in the way, but there are other theories. "Martha did go to the Eras tour and sat in the [VIP] tent in 2023, but that was the last time [they talked]," a source told Page Six. It doesn't stop there. Hunt doesn't even follow Swift on Instagram, as of September 2026.
Zendaya and Taylor Swift's bond likely fell apart
There was a time when Zendaya was said to be in Taylor Swift's girl squad. Back in May 2015, Zendaya was reportedly seen hanging out with Swift and her celebrity friends at the Billboard Music Awards. Swift also teamed up with Zendaya for the "Bad Blood" music video, which was released that same month. Zendaya played Cut-Throat, Swift's ally, in the music video. "We met over text message!" Zendaya told People in August 2015 of how she first met the singer. "Honestly, she's really a sweetheart. She's definitely someone that is just a really, really nice person."
So, what went wrong? Here's the Taylor Swift and Zendaya drama explained in full, but long story short: Swift's squad had a lot of stars and Zendaya didn't seem interested in the idea of being in a celebrity squad. In December 2015's Complex magazine cover story (via Teen Vogue), the former Disney Channel star laid rumors of her being a part of the crew to rest when she didn't list Swift as one of her close friends. "I don't do industry kids. That vibe is just so weird because I feel like you want something from me," she explained. As reported by E! News, Zendaya hit the like and unlike button on controversial tweets after Kanye West's beef with Swift reached a boiling point in July 2016. "I'm glad Zendaya was never really down with that whole Taylor squad s**t," one of the tweets read. Moreover, Zendaya's attendance at Swift's July 2026 marriage was not officially confirmed.
Taylor Swift and Jessica Szohr seem to have drifted apart
It's interesting to see what Jessica Szohr has been doing since "Gossip Girl" ended, and according to Taylor Swift, Szohr kept busy. Swift spilled some behind-the-scenes tea about her music video "22" on "Good Morning America" back in March 2013, and boy, was it piping hot. She said, "I've never had this much fun shooting a video because my friends in the video are actually my real-life best friends." Szohr starred in the video and opened up to US Weekly about how the music video came to be. She shared, "Taylor wrote a song and all of her girlfriends ... we've all been through breakups and stuff together. So, she asked a few of us to come and have a fun day at the beach."
It's safe to say that Swift and Szohr weren't all work and no play, and play they did after showing up at the opening of "That Awkward Moment" back in January 2014. Clue: They bowled. Swift and Szohr enjoyed each other's company at Lucky Strike. But are they still in touch? Well, they aren't making public appearances like they once did. Szohr's name hasn't even popped up on the list of celebrities who were seen attending Swift and Travis Kelce's nuptials in July 2026. This is not to say that Szohr wasn't invited or didn't attend. There doesn't seem to be any trace of a dramatic fallout, especially considering that Szohr still follows Swift on Instagram, but there are no recent photos of the two together on either profiles.
